NELSON, B.C. - The Province is investing an additional $5.5 million to improve community safety and reduce the risk of interface fires by supporting local governments' community wildfire protection efforts.
The funding will allow communities to develop and implement Community Wildfire Protection Plans and to conduct on-the-ground fuel treatments. The plans identify fire hazards in and adjacent to communities, and
propose a wildfire hazard reduction strategy focused on higher-risk areas of the community. The funding increases the amount the Province has provided to local governments, through the Union of B.C. Municipalities, to help pay for interface fire preparation to over $37 million since the Filmon Firestorm Review of 2004.
Eighty-six local governments are preparing or have completed Community Wildfire Protection Plans, and about 200 treatment projects are underway, resulting in more than 30,000 hectares being treated in and around communities since the fuel management program began in 2004.
There are approximately 2,000 wildfires in British Columbia each year.
