Prince George, B.C. – A local athlete has been awarded a scholarship at Grande Prairie Regional College.

Kelly Road High School student, Chelsey Thorne, recently attended an ID camp in Grande Prairie, and the coaches and staff made her their top pick for their women’s basketball team this fall.

The College describes Chelsey as “A tenacious defender that can create offence with her speed and hustle.”

Her success should come as no surprise,  Chelsey was named to the Prince George City All-Star team this year after capping off a successful career at Kelly Road Secondary School. In her time with the team, she collected numerous top defensive player awards, including being named top defensive player at the recent zones tournament.  She has been given many all-star accolades and was named team MVP two years in a row. She was also team captain for the squad this season and led them in scoring.

Chelsey  is also   a top  softball player.  She is off to Kelowna this weekend where she has been invited to try out for Team B.C.   as either a catcher, or short stop, her two favourite positions.

Chelsey’s  abilities  and team ethic  catapulted her to  the senior  Kelly Road Basketball team during her  first year  at the high school. While  news of  her  scholarship  is being celebrated by  those who have coached her or been on  a team with her, there are some who  are  asking why she has to leave B.C. in order to play.  “She is the  epitome of  the type of player that should be  playing on  the women’s team at UNBC” says one  Thorne  supporter, “I will forever be asking  how  did the (UNBC) team  miss out on  signing her up?”

Chelsey  plans to study to be a nurse.

Hey Chelsea:

Good Girl and Good Luck. Carry your colors proudly...
If UNBC can't or wouldn't step up to the plate to get this crackerjack athelete then too bad. She has every right to go where she will be valued. Her scholarship will offset her educational costs.... Don't know how much but every little bit helps! Unfortunate she couldn't head off to the US on an atheletic scholarship...good schools down there too who would offer full rides!
