Prince George, B.C. – The Forestry roundtable is set to hold a session in Prince George this Saturday, but in a week’s time, there will be a special information session for displaced forestry workers.

On Saturday May 10th local area educational and skills training service providers will set up at the Prince George Civic Centre to provide information to workers and family about services that are available to assist people in this difficult time.

The project is co-sponsored by the United Steelworkers Local 1-424, College of New Caledonia and M. Turner& Associates.

It is expected there will be 16 booths and there are some goodies to go along with this event.

The first 400 will receive a free steel lunch box (one per family) and there will be free hot dogs and refreshments throughout the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. event.

The United Steel workers Local 1-424, have partnered to organize this public event which is open to all forest workers. The Union has received financial support from the Province of BC to assist with the costs of the event and follow up work in other communities.

good for the steelworkers, this is serious stuff folks, those who got us into this mess should be the ones to come forward with the solution, lets start by putting the politicos on half salary just to get their attention before we tar & feather them and anybody else that took tax money when the bugs first got started. A lot of carbon in those dead trees maybe we could revitalize the karrick LTC process if the forest companies could make the switch to the energy business, no they can't do this as this province is 40+ billion in debt to the new york money boys who just happen to own the free world's oil companies.debt sucks
Maybe the folks at the round table should focus on helping people put food on the table instead of giving them a lunch-box they don't need!
A free lunch box, more stupidity! Typical of todays political mentality. The idiotic thought is to "do something nice for the people" I think it more likely that they have to have free goodies to ensure that anybody turns up. Why don't they use the money for something useful? We are becoming a welfare state.
metalman.
The objective is to provide information that will assist people whose jobs are theatened or have already lost their job because of the state of the forest industry.Assisting people through awareness of services and programs that are available can only be helpful.many people displaced to day have never been out of work and fine it difficult to work through or even know about programs that are already in place to help people, help themselfs.Sometimes a little incentive helps to bring attention to an event.People willing to step forward to help in anyway they can should be welcome news, it's a start and it can't hurt.
I can't believe this...talk about an insult!
What is it...charity?..welfare?
How about they actually do something for forestry workers besides sit at the big round table and blow off hot air?
It seems nothing ever comes from these chat sessions.
Get out in the field and get a little mud on themselves and talk to the affected people, because they are the ones who will have the answers!
Do these guy's actually get paid for this?
front page.........Canfor pulp is showing a profit for last quarter. So do all the suppliers and contractors/employees who took a 10% cut go back to their original rates now on pulp related items/work?
Free lunch box eh.. Metalman to add onto your post.. What good is a free lunch box if you dont have a job to take it to? and its also getting to the point where you wont be able to afford food to put in it the way things are going.

Congratulations to the steelworkers and others that put this on. Some of you are missing the point. This is to help workers and it is a great idea! Anything that brings all the agencies together under one roof to inform the workers of what is available is a great idea! Some of you folks need to get off your negative train and smell the flowers.
Am I right in assuming that there will be a bunch of SQUARES sitting at this ROUND table? That they will then report to the OVAL office and the PENTAGON? Let's do a TRIANGULAR table for a change. That way we could even mitigate his honour.
Well said old hippy.I have been off for 6 months. The union really beleieve they are doing something.Sorry 20 year union employee who beleives that the new group running this are great at being good union people. They work harder at getting out work than stepping and getting dirty. big unions and big business are one and the same.I have not heard or read any thing from the president of the steelworkers who was the former head of local 6500.But I have read about his position on clinton/ obama.I lived and worked with a former head of that local and Mickey would be turning over in his grave if he saw how shabbly this has been handled.
It would be handy if someone from 1-424 could travel to some of the other areas hit within thier area. I see no benefit from sitting on thier a$$es in PG.

It should be re-named local PG 1-424.

Who exactly is this knowledge for? local residents?.

I mean no insults to anyone who may be a local resident of PG. I am just tired of seeing what I consider 'local support' from the union. 1-424 has a larger area than just the city of PG. These other areas are being neglected terribly by the union.
