Prince George, B.C. - “We are three weeks to a month behind other years in reaching spring” that is according to Jos Van Hage, who says the trees haven’t started to break and that’s the latest he has seen since he arrived in Prince George in 1979.
“The earliest we have had the trees start to bud was at the end of March, now I’m not saying that’s normal but somewhere in between is for sure. This year people can still prune their trees and it is almost the 1st of May."
Activity at garden centres is a pretty good sign of where we are "season wise", so we asked what’s happening at other Art Knapp stores? Jos says shrubs are selling on Vancouver Island, but the flowers are not. “ They have had really cool temperatures there as well.” As for the Okanagan, Jos says the store in Kamloops told him yesterday they are not selling flowering plants as well” They say there still is a chill in the area.”
The most snow that Prince George has ever received on April 30th was back in 1959 when we received 4.1 centimeters.
Doug Lundquist of Environment Canada says, don’t despair quite yet, “The long range forecast is calling for above normal temperatures starting the week of May 8th through to May 15th.”
The long range forecast he says has been pretty accurate “It isn’t unusual to get snow in May” says Lundquist who grew up in the Peace, “you can get 1 or 2 centimeters in May but it usually doesn’t last for a day.”
“What happened today was there was an upper low and we predicted that it would turn and go over Alberta. It didn’t and so we have that upper low above us. “
Lundquist says by the weekend the temperature is expected to return to more normal values.
