Prince George, B.C. - The Premier has announced further details on the funding Minister of Forest and Range Rich Coleman alluded to during the Forestry Roundtable stop in Prince George a week ago.
Today, Premier Gordon Campbell told the Interior Logging Association, $129 million dollars in the Community Development fund will see $17.5 million set aside for those in the forestry industry who need tuition to retrain or upgrade skills, and a further $85.5 million will go towards bridge funding for those looking to retire.
The Premier says there will also be a further $26 million available for short term job creation programs.
It s estimated that 3500 forestry related jobs have been lost in the past year in the Central Interior and north of B.C. because of the downturn in the lumber markets brought on by the collapse of the U.S. housing market.
The U.S. housing market is not expected to show any signs of recovery for at least another year.
The Premier will address the North Central Municipal Association this afternoon and will later announce funding for a Prince George Spirit Square.
