Prince George, B.C. - Cooler temperatures and lower precipitation than predicted resulted in the Fraser River cresting at a lower level than expected.

Thursday predictions indicated that the Fraser River would reach a peak level of 9.9 metres Thursday; the official flood level on the Fraser is 9.4 metres at the South Fort George flood gauge. However, the river peaked overnight and began to recede,  the latest check  (at 11:00 a.m. ) had the gauge at South Fort registering a level of 9.551 meters.

Although the  River level is receding, the evacuation order remains in effect for residents of Ferrell Road.

Meanwhile, City staff continue to monitor water levels near Landooz Road. The road remains open but, in case water levels along that area of the Fraser River rise, a contingency plan is in place to maintain access to residences.

People are also urged to keep their boats off the river at this time of increased river flows. The speed and volume of water in the Fraser River channel makes boating very dangerous. As well, boats in the river create wave action that might increase erosion along the riverbanks, which would further compound efforts to maintain public safety and protect property.

As well, the City continues to urge people to stay away from the shorelines of the Fraser and Nechako rivers. The shorelines might be unstable due to erosion taking place below the surface of the river, and the banks are wet and slippery.
