Williams Lake, B.C. - The lawyer representing the wife of Don Lewis says he will seek a further adjournment of the inquest into Lewis's death in an attempt to raise more money to conduct a proper cross examination of witnesses testifying at the Coroner's inquest.
Cameron Ward told the Coroner, Shane DeMeyer, that while the RCMP officer who did the shooting is represented by two lawyers, there are two public relations RCMP officers on hand and several other RCMP officers, his client must provide her own legal funds, and that he said is not serving justice in any way what so ever.
"We have here the RCMP investigating the RCMP and the family cannot receive any help in ensuring that the facts of the matter are heard." says Ward.
At the inquest earlier today Const Cole Brewer took the stand to tell how he went to McLeese Lake after a complaint had come in from a McLeese Lake resident that someone was camping on the runaway lane near the community.
At the top of the runaway, he discovered a man sleeping in a one man tent.
Earlier he had observed a motorcycle parked near the camp and had checked the registered owner to find out that it was registered to a Sarah Penny.
Brewer says the man identified himself as a Mr Lee. Brewer said he became suspicious and wanted to check the man out further. As he questioned the man, he suddenly got up and took off running down the hill and Brewer took off after him. Brewer was able to catch him and throw him to the ground several times.
Const. Brewer did hit him with his baton, and pepper sparyed him but he said Lewis, kept coming at him . At one point as the two fought over Brewer's gun, and Brewer says Leiws threatened to kill him.
Brewer says he was able to strike a blow to Lewis with his revolver and finally, after the fight continued over the gun, fired one shot into Lewis’s chest. At that point he said Lewis said "You shot me, you f.......shot me."
Brewer says they continued to fight after the shot was fired and finally he was able to get his handcuffs on Lewis and attach him to a tree.
As Brewer went down the hill to call for help, Lewis bled to death while being handcuffed to the tree.
