Northern Trust Announces $3.7 Million in Funding

Prince George, B.C. - Northern Development Initiative Trust announced today new economic development funding for central and northern British Columbia of more than $3.7 million.
“The communities of central and northern British Columbia are facing challenges, but also see a number of opportunities to diversify or develop their economies,” stated Trust Chair, Bruce Sutherland. “The Trust is very pleased to be announcing a new round of funding that will support the economic development work of our communities.”
Highlights of the recent approvals totalling over $300,000 in funding for projects that will provide benefits to Quesnel and the North Cariboo projects include:
1. Construction of a bulk water metering facility in Quesnel that will promote water conservation, improve bulk
water quality, and generate revenue for the City
2. A regional tourism marketing campaign led by the Quesnel Chamber of Commerce to secure international exposure
for the region in collaboration with Rocky Mountaineer Vacations
3. Engineering and design to enable development of an industrial park in Quesnel for attraction and expansion of
industry and job creation in the region
4. A marketing initiative for Quesnel, and expansion of the Alex Fraser Park Agri-Plex.
The Northern Development Initiative Trust is presenting the 2008 Grant Writing Course to facilitate training for new grant writers with the Trust’s Small Community Grant Writer Program. This training course is available to local government staff, First Nations communities, and community non-profit groups located within the Trust region via web and teleconferencing technology. Northern Development Initiative Trust was established in 2004 to act as a catalyst for economic development opportunities in central and northern British Columbia. The Trust was provided with initial capital deposits from the Government of British Columbia totalling $185 million to support regional economic development funding and has a current balance of $200 million. Over $45 million in funding has been committed to 207 projects with a total project value of over $263 million.
Northern Development Initiative Trust covers a region spanning over seventy percent of the Province’s geography, extending from Lytton to Fort Nelson and from Valemount to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Forty incorporated communities, ten regional districts and numerous First Nations communities are located within the Trust area and can benefit from accessing the Trust’s regional development, cross regional, and pine beetle recovery funding.

Good for the City of Quesnel. Administration was probably looking for a pool of money to fund these projects anyway.
Now hopefully the City attracts the notice of some inventor/investor that can make use of the Quesnel infrastructure improvements.
What would be ideal though would be for this fund to be used to actually fund/loan to someone not in government. Looks like the various governments (including the 1st) are rubbing their hands waiting their turn to pea away this pool of cash.
