Prince George, B.C – A mediator has been called in to help settle the dispute between Cupe 399 Outside Workers, Cupe 1048 Inside Workers and The City of Prince George.

The parties were unable to come to an agreement during their bargaining discussions earlier this week.

A representative from Cupe says mediation will begin on Monday June 16, 2008 and they are optimistic that a mediator will be able to settle this dispute.

The agreement expired December 31, 2007.  Cupe declined comment on any further details of the agreement, however, said the City of Prince George made a final offer on May 2, 2008 which was rejected by the membership on May 20, 2008.  Cupe 399 and 1048 represent over 600 city workers.

A mediator mandate. What taxpayer pays the mediator? Now does the mediator get a raise? Would the mediator benefit by forcing higher wages for the union?
My only contention is the wages for public employees and elected officials should be made public and voted on by the taxpayer. So much lack of accountability in our system of government. The city can increase their expense accounts and wages at any time yet deny CUPE. Certainly not a fair practice. If the mayor can dip into the taxpayer piggy bank at will, so should city employees...imo.
I'm pleased that a mediator is being involved in resolving this. Better to come to a resolution before any damage is done to their relationship. Chester
"..before any damage is done to their relationship..."

HeeHee! Good one. Funny!
