Tax Freedom Day Arrives Earlier Once Again

Happy Tax Freedom Day!  If you missed it, that’s likely because you weren’t expecting the day to arrive so soon.  Last Saturday, June 14th marked the national average for Tax Freedom Day. Here in British Columbia it arrived even earlier on June 13th.

Calculated by the Fraser Institute, an independent Canadian research and educational organization, Tax Freedom Day symbolically marks the day when Canadians have paid their total tax bill to all levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal.

This year’s Tax Freedom Day is significant because, arriving four days earlier than last year, it’s the earliest the benchmark has been observed in recent memory.  In all, Tax Freedom Day falls a full 11 DAYS EARLIER than when our Conservative Government took office.

In 2005, the former Liberal government’s last year in office, Canada registered its latest Tax Freedom Day in history!  Back then, it fell on June 25th, meaning every dollar earned before that day was required to pay taxes owing.

Since those Liberal days, successive Conservative federal budgets in 2006, 2007 and 2008, along with the October 2007 Economic Statement, have delivered $200-billion in tax cuts to individuals and businesses and have pushed Tax Freedom Day earlier and earlier each year.

Among other factors, the Fraser Institute noted that the cut in the GST from 7% to 5% helped reduce Canadians’ tax bill.  In addition, our Government has implemented a permanent reduction in the lowest personal income tax rate; introduced income splitting for pensioners; dedicated all interest savings from reducing the federal debt to personal income tax reductions through the Tax Back Guarantee; and, introduced the $2,000 child tax credit.

So what does this mean in real monetary terms?  A typical working family in Canada is better off today by almost $3,500 per year than when our Government was sworn into office.

And yet, incredibly, the federal Liberals and the New Democratic Party are pushing to restore old taxes and/or create new ones.  Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has stated he would reverse the Conservative GST cut.  Meanwhile, he’s facing opposition within his own party on his proposal to place a new kind of tax that would lead to higher costs for home heating fuel and other essentials.

Resistance to this proposal transcends politics and even concern over the Environment.  Canada MUST manage its greenhouse gas emissions through a variety of innovative and responsible avenues … but it must NOT be done on the backs of Canadians trying to stay warm during a cold Canadian winter, especially pensioners and so many others trying to survive on a fixed income!

Regardless of the progress made in reducing Canadians’ tax bill, as demonstrated by the early arrival of Tax Freedom Day, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has firmly stated that he believes Canadians still pay too much tax.  That’s why our Government remains committed to the responsible management of the nation’s finances in order to keep spending and taxation under control.

Canadians work hard to build a better future for themselves and their families … they deserve a government that will help them to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to say I'm a Conservative supporter, but bill c-61 is not the way to protect copyrights. I'm afraid this bill is going to lose you some support.
Earth to Jay, earth to Jay.

Do you think this is really an improtant thing to be wasting my tax dollars on?
Reporting to us that it's tax freedom day.

Back to your office with you, and smoke another one.

Do you think anyone really cares about
"tax freedom day"

It's a frikken joke Jay.
When will you get it buddy?

Try doing something constructive with your time and our tax dollars.

Maybe try going into your next sitting of parliament and not acting like a bunch of whinning children.
Hill:" Canadians work hard to build a better future for themselves and their families … they deserve a government that will help them to enjoy the fruits of their labour."

I couldn't agree more! So, when are Canadians going to get such a government?

Gee thanks Jay. It warms my heart to know that I'm working half the year to pay the government at various levels.

Not good enough. And just wait until inflation kicks in.
Couldn't agree more with all the posts here...gee, no word about our rivers, forestry, gas tax, increased fuel costs etc, etc.

Are you living under a rock Jay? I am still waiting for a response to my email from 2 months ago. Even a simple thx for the heads up or a sorry not bothering with it would've been nice. Address your constituents please.
Everyone complains about paying INCREASED taxes yet they want the best healthcare, new roads and injection sites.

Do you think that there have been no increased costs running a government?

pgdealer don't you complain about increased taxes? Or do you benefit from increased taxes?
The citizens of this country deserve the best healthcare money can buy.
Healthcare should be the #1 issue ahead of any other issue.
New roads, whos wanting new roads? Perhaps some road repairs would be good.
Injection sites?
Tax freedom day in India is March 14th ....

Tax freedom day in Israel is August 2 ....

Norway, July 29
Sweden July 29
France July 16
Germany July 5
Poland June 25
Brazil May 27
USA April 23
Estonia April 24
Australia April 24
South Africa May 12 ......

And this means what for those living in those countries?

So, all those who prefer to pay as little tax as possible, India appears to be a good choice ..... :-)
I take it by your post owl that you enjoy high taxes?

We pay too much and don't get fair value. End of story.
Whenever I pay money for something, I look at the value I get for it. In the case of taxes, I pay less here for the residence I live in than my parents in the east pay and less than most others in BC in similar sized communities pay. (+)

I can see the results of that all around me while in PG. I have often said, I would like better service and I am willing to pay for it. (-)

When it come to the taxes which give me my health care, etc. I think I am also getting a relatively good deal. (+)

When one looks at fair value, one has to look at other countries since Canadians all pay similar federal and provincial taxes and even municipal taxes + sales + user fees, etc. (+-)

The one problem with looking at other countries is that the calculation varies, so they are approximate at best. The Canadian one is calculated by the Fraser Institute and some are saying that if they were using methods closer aligned to those of other countries, such as the USA, the freedom day would be a month earlier. (-)

I am wondering if this is a "positive" or "negative" post ..... :-) ... suppose it depends, as usual, who looks at it .... (-)
Well, the way I look at it is...

For the amount I pay, I should be getting far more 'services' and much less waste. I expect governments at all levels to be responsible with my money, but I don't see that happening.
I would like to give credit for any and all attempts at reducing taxes, reducing debt, reducing size of government and reducing spending. Sure it's not enough, but it's like trying to turn the Titanic around. It's a very slow process. Don't give up. Instead, encourage them and continue to make some thoughtful suggestions for them to consider.

Why is it so difficult to respond positively when there is good news? Chester

Um, for me I expect more from my MP in his articles than "Happy Tax Freedom Day"...

Haven't heard boo from him in regards to some very important issues. Guess I haven't been around long enough to be numbed by political apathy where all I need is a big smile and a by the way we took less of your money today.

You are absolutely right Chester, it is good news...relatively speaking.
Take that 4 extra tax days and put it into healthcare or education. I'll give those four extra days back if you can give us a well managed health care system that so many other nations seem to be able to maintain. Use my four days to try to get a system like France, Australia, England, Ireland, Norway, Sweden. Don't give me a disfunctional system like our neighbours to the south.
Hey? Dont be too hard on Jay, If he gets upset and quits, Im thinking we will have to pay a very handsome severance package.
Whoops I should be quiet.
So, tinyapplecork, just what is it that you do to make this a better place to live? Chester
