Come on you drivers here in PG! Wake up and look around you! This is just unacceptable, but unfortunately it happens way too often. People, put down your cell phones, your cup of coffee, and slow down. Respect others that use the road as well, like cyclists and pedestrians. I'm a cyclist and just about every day I have a near miss with a vehicle. I would rather stay off the roads all together (I ride a mountain bike) but pretty well impossible with the awful trail network in this town. Anyway, I'm really glad to hear that the cyclist is ok and managed to walk away from this one....
As a cyclist I do not like the new bike lanes as drivers use the lanes as parking lots so I am no safer than I was before. Instead of a white line it should be yellow and then maybe drivers would stay off the lane.
A lot of bicycle riders have to wake up also. Riding against traffic, blowing stop signs. My main peeve is cyclists riding two wide with no regard to traffic. Your soft pink body doesen't hold up well against 4000 lbs of metal.

I know that is not the legal method, but it may very well be the safest method because you see what is coming at you and, as the more maneuverable vehicle, you can take evasive action.

With respect to curbside parking and bike lanes, downtown Vancouver has the dedicated bike lanes to the road side of the curb parking spaces .....

It would likely be safer if that were reversed - bike lanes at the curb and parking on the traffic side of the bike lane. Ultimate protection except at intersections and those situations were a passenger from a parked car opens a door without first looking to see if the bike lane is clear .....
