Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Airport is working hard to be “green”.
“Our airport is in what is known as a green corridor so we want to be as green as possible” says Airport General Manager Stieg Hoeg.
He says the airport has a strategy which he hopes will lead the Prince George Airport to being the first carbon neutral airport in North America.
“We are endeavouring to maximize our environmentally friendliness” says Hoeg who points to the new LED lighting that will be in place on the new runway as one example. The LED lighting is expected to save about $80,000 a year in energy costs, but there are also savings in replacement and repair times. “The new lights are good for 60 thousand hours as compared to the current lights that have a 2,000 hour life, so there will be savings in time and energy spent replacing the lights.”
We recently ordered a new truck which has 97% fewer emissions than the truck we bought ten years ago. Hoeg says they will be replacing baggage carts with electrical ones and have added plug ins on the apron design so planes can be plugged in for power rather than use diesel generators.
Hoeg says being green benefits everyone “We embrace the opportunity to be environmentally friendly because that means a reduction in fuels and a reduction in costs which we can pass along to our customers.”
Paving of the runway will start July 2nd, and Hoeg says he fully expects to see a cargo plane land at YXS this year "We have a Chinese carrier coming to look at the airport in September". Just back from China, hoeg says there have been repeat meetings with several carriers and he is confident the runway extension plan and cargo handling expansion will be a success.
