P.G. Airport Making Moves to be Green

Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Airport is working hard to be “green”.
“Our airport is in what is known as a green corridor so we want to be as green as possible” says Airport General Manager Stieg Hoeg.

He says the airport has a strategy which he hopes will lead the Prince George Airport to being the first carbon neutral airport in North America.

“We are endeavouring to maximize our environmentally friendliness” says Hoeg who points to the new LED lighting that will be in place on the new runway as one example. The LED lighting is expected to save about $80,000 a year in energy costs, but there are also savings in replacement and repair times. “The new lights are good for 60 thousand hours as compared to the current lights that have a 2,000 hour life, so there will be savings in time and energy spent replacing the lights.”

We recently ordered a new truck which has 97% fewer emissions than  the truck we bought ten years ago. Hoeg says they will be replacing baggage carts with electrical ones and have added plug ins on the apron design so planes can be plugged in for power rather than use diesel generators.

Hoeg says being green benefits everyone “We embrace the opportunity to be environmentally friendly because that means a reduction in fuels and a reduction in costs which we can pass along to our customers.”

Paving of the runway will start July 2nd, and Hoeg says he fully expects to see a cargo plane land at YXS this year "We have a Chinese carrier coming to look at the airport in September".   Just back from China, hoeg says there have been  repeat meetings with several carriers and he is confident the runway extension plan and cargo  handling expansion will be a success.

This is really cute! Does being green include the massive plumes of black, black smoke that regularly are emitted from the airport? This has been going on for years, and nobody seems to notice or mind. Perhaps someone should enquire as to why that is necessary in the "green" plan. Conservatively, I would suggest one of these episodes, clearly visible for miles, would negate all the things they are boasting about doing. It happens about once a week. Perhaps it should be newsworthy.
Not to mention the fact that jet aircraft are one of the LARGEST polluters on the planet.
Would you rather they not do a darn thing, and if they did nothing would you whine and bitch about that to?
Interesting comment, lostfaith. Another interesting fact is that at the time of 9 11 when all air flights were cancelled for 3 days in the US, the temperature in Arizona increased by a couple of degrees. This was due to the lack of jet clouds that allowed to sun to shine down more intensly on the areas east of LA, San Francisco and Seatle.

So if everyone is concerned about global warming, perhaps we need to promote the creation of clouds to block out the sun. LOL.

How is that for logic.

Further on the global warming issue, check out www.icecap.us and see what the scientists in the know are really saying about C02 and its effect on climate change.
Sure are a lot of whinney people out there. YXS is doing a great job, they will be our economic catalyst, their expansion to find new revenues and the possible new industrial lands.

Way to go Stieg.

When the the airport had to go to Government for funds it was the death knell for the airport. "Build it and they will come" was their business plan. What they sould of done before the sod was turned they are doing now trying to get cargo planes to use the facility.

They more then likely dont even know how much impact the cost of fuel to airlines will have on air traffic. Mr Hoeg is on autopilot. He dosent know where he is going.

Cheers
I'm not whining. I'm stating a fact. At least once a week there are massive black plumes of smoke eminating from the airport. It isn't a new thing. But if they are going to be posturing about being "green", perhaps they should have a look at that. And maybe some other folks in position to do something about it should too.
I too plan to become green. Going to paint my old junker green, Going to fertilize my lawn so it becomes green, Going to try to keep a few after tax greenbacks in my green purse and trying not to turn green after hearing some of the political retoric that abounds. Oh yes, i wil be doing my bit for the environment by not driving as much (can't afford to after city taxes and gas price increases) Think green. it's the latest buzword folks.
Watch waht will happen to this little tidbit in the news. This could be a major short term problem for the oilsands. Could send gasoline prices even higher since the sands oil is a major source of the oil supply to the US. I was wondering when there would be reaction from some of the users.

"Pierre Alvarez of the Canadian Association of Oil Producers, said such a resolution would be almost impossible to enforce because a litre of fuel cannot be traced back to the oil from which it was produced."

Guess this person has something to learn about what consumers did to forest products. They had to put a "chain of custody" system in place to ensure that the fibre that went into the purchase of a magazine came from a forest which is maionaged to be sustainable.

Would not be too difficult to set up a similar system for the oil industry.

So, green has been the word for a while. The question is, what will be audited and what will not be audited.
Well, whinney is what a horse says, and I doubt that we have equine participation on this forum. So what we do have is a diverse group expressing opinions, which may easily be construed as complaining by some. Thankfully we live in a free country, and are soon to be carbon neutral/eco friendly/green/low emission. That's all for now.
