The new style picnic table
The City of Prince George is incorporating pine beetle enhanced wood into new concrete picnic tables for City parks. While most of the table is concrete, the seats feature mountain pine beetle wood.
Central Cariboo Precast made the cement portion of the tables, while Dunkley Lumber provided the beetle wood for the seats.
At a cost of $1,000.00 per table, Shawn Cook, Assistant Parks Supervisor, Environmental Services, says the tables should stand the test of time. "The mountain pine beetle wood is as tough, if not tougher than cedar" says Cook, "We developed three proto types before coming up with this final design, which I think is pretty exciting."

The distinct mountain pine beetle "stain" is evident on the seats of these new tables
So far, 12 have been installed in Fort George Park and four have been set up in Connaught Hill Park.

I totally like the concept. I think it could even be improved. I would suggest the city charge double the $1000 cost and allow the tables to be sponsered as memorial tables. If demand is large then get more tables and up the price. Put the extra money into more user friendly venues in the city parks.
I think for the public park setting these tables are a great design that is strong, and looks good. Its a bonus that they are locally made with local materials.
Maybe they could be marketed to other cities in BC?
I like it.
