A Shifty Plan That WON’T Help our Environment But WILL Make YOU Pay!

While I will reiterate later in this column the Conservative Government’s historic environmental plan, I believe it necessary as your Member of Parliament to point out the hard, (very) cold facts about how Mr. Dion’s “Green Shift”, announced last week, will only end with taxpayers getting the “green shaft”.

One thing that even Liberals agree upon is that your home heating and electricity bill will go up under their plan to impose a $40-per-tonne carbon tax … especially in rural Canada where many families have no choice but to heat their homes with oil.

Yet no matter where you live in Canada, Mr. Dion’s proposal would make the cost of EVERYTHING go up due to increased manufacturing and transportation costs.  That’s food, clothes, medicine and all the essential items you and your family must buy.

Among other things, diesel would triple under the Liberal Green Shift.  What alternatives does a trucker or a farmer have that doesn’t include diesel?  The Atlantic Trucking Association estimates the average consumer would pay $8 more for a head of lettuce at your local grocery store.  Not only will domestic costs increase, the costs of our exported goods will also be affected.

Yet Mr. Dion says Canadians can benefit from his carbon tax if they are “good citizens”.

You’re not a bad citizen because you need to drive to work.  You’re not a bad citizen because you have to shuttle your kids around from school to home to soccer practice.  You're not a bad citizen because you have to heat your home with home heating oil.  And you're not a bad citizen because your groceries were transported by truck.

To paraphrase one of my cabinet colleagues, Mr. Dion appears to shrug off the legitimate concerns of Canadians already struggling to make ends meet with a careless “shift happens”.

His assertion that the added costs his scheme will create would be offset by personal tax cuts has been dismissed by anyone with basic economic knowledge.  He simply cannot afford nor practically implement offsets to counter the out-of-control price increases and economic fallout his all-encompassing tax would set into motion.

And it’s all for naught.  His plan has no targets and does absolutely nothing tangible to reduce emissions.

Our Conservative Government’s environmental plan sets MANDATORY emissions and pollution targets for the first time in history! These industry targets will be stringent and will be tightened every year.  As a result, greenhouse gases will be reduced by 20% by 2020 … BY LAW!  Air pollution will be cut IN HALF by 2015 (just seven years from now) … BY LAW!

At the same time, we’re working to make sure that Canadians will have more environmentally-friendly alternatives in the future.  We’ve channeled $1.5-BILLION to the provinces for action on green technology; $230-million for the ecoEnergy technology initiative; $150-million for Arctic climate research; and, $15-million for the Canada School of Sustainable Energy.

Our Conservative plan will make Canada a world leader in environmental stewardship without devastating our economy.

And that’s good news for over-taxed Canadians.

Joyce Murray-NDP MP Vancouver Quadra submitted Jay Hill's entire Report? I strained my eyes to find a difference anywhere - is there one? What's the point? The NDP has nothing different to say or contribute?

Puzzled, to say the least...or maybe not.
Just for fun remove the words Dion where they appear and insert BC Liberal ,then re-read the article. Now it makes sense.
