Prince George, B.C. - Residential tax time is closing in.

Rural residents  will have to file their taxes today.

Municipal taxes for the city of Prince George are due on Friday, and if nothing else, the application for the home owner’s grant has to be filed by that date.

A 5% penalty will be added to any current outstanding taxes remaining unpaid after the due date. A further 5% penalty will be applied to the current outstanding taxes remaining unpaid after the 2nd Friday in September.

Penalties are also applicable to the Home Owner Grant portion of your taxes. Until the Home Owner Grant is claimed, that portion of the balance on your tax account is considered taxes outstanding.

You can pay your taxes at City Hall, at most financial institutions, electronically, or by mail, but if you mail in your taxes it has to arrive at the due date, not just be post marked on the due date.

If you have a mortgage, sign and complete the homeowner grant segment and make sure that is received by City Hall   by the due date.

Ummm this might be a silly question, but I'm a new homeowner so I don't know....

If you pay your taxes monthly with your mortgage, do you have to do anything? or does the mortgage company just send the city the money for you? and how do I know if I've paid enough money? I was hoping I'd get something in the mail but I haven't.
Fair question.
You SHOULD get a tax notice in the mail that you need to take in to city hall and have stamped, even though the actual tax has already been paid by the mortgage holder.
This is for the homeowners grant.
You should have already recieved this, I would think.
Going to City Hall is the low-tech way to do it... ;-)

You can also do this online through the city's website provided your banking information is current on your property tax bill.

I did the homeowners grant online as soon as I got the original notice in the mail, that was about a month or so ago...but I never heard anything since.
Man alive! Being a grownup is complicated!
Wow, I figured it out, in case anyone else is wondering, the mortgage company just pays it for you and then they notify you if there is not enough moolah in your "tax account". At least, thats how it works for us.
I will wait until the last minute to pay my tax grab being done by the city. A $650 increase in property taxes is not good for my pension. This grab ranks right up ther with Gordo's gas tax. I sent e-mails to all aldermen/women requesting an explanation as to why my city taxes had increased aout 32%. Three replys were received: the one I really appreciated was from Shirley Gratton which read "Thank you for your concerns with yours and my increase in the taxes.I appreciate your email." I wasn't at all concerned with Shirley's taxes, just mine. The question is still. why the huge increase and no services for it. I don't have city water, sewer, curbs, storm sewers, etc. but yet pay over $2,000 a year in taxes even with the over 65 home owner grant. Won't take much thinking on who to vote for come November. None of the present pasal of thieves that populate city hall. Come next year none of the Lieberal group will be receiving my vote after the gas tax grab just perpetuated on the citizens of northern BC

$650...wow!...that's a stiff whack!
But your right camoose...show your dis-pleasure with your vote!
I highly doubt the city cares when they get their money, but whatever makes you feel good.
"Come next year none of the Lieberal group will be receiving my vote after the gas tax grab just perpetuated on the citizens of northern BC"

Like I said in another thread, why do people care so much that gas went up a couple of cents when it's gone up much more than that in just the last six months to a year.

At least you knew it was coming and you got $100 to help offset it.

We have no choice but to vote Li"e"beral. Do you want to go back to the Glen Clark faisco's? That man was an idiot! Why did Jimmie Pattison hire him? He's charming. He could probably charm the monkey's out of the trees. (No pun there, I believe he did). That's us.

I agree that our municipal government is out of control.

Gas? It's a life style change. Let's do it. No demand, supply goes up, prices come down. Hang in there!. Shop locally.
I am so sorry Camoose. Our elderly, sick and poor are being screwed!! What is this world coming to when we are hurting the people who helped to build this country. When work was really work and the people who broke their backs doing it are continously ignored in all forms of government. Shame on us, shame on them!

Again Camoose, I apologise to you and all our elderly for any hardships we make you endure. :(

First off, I support no political party, they are all bad once elected. I figure it's about time we in BC got out of this us or them rut. There can be more than 2 political parties.

I don't need any life style changes dictated by governments. The best life style change would be to get rid of dishonest politicians that say one thing to get elected and then do as they or their leader pleases once they are in office. Whatever happened to the honest politician of any stripe?
