Prince George, B.C. – There is a new owner of the Ft St James sawmill and the mill will be resurrected.
The court has approved selling the mill to Conex for a price of $12.8 million dollars. The new owners say they would like to have the mill back up and running by the end of August.
Steelworkers Local 1-494 President Frank Everitt says the news is welcome for the membership “We had about 285 members at that mill, they have been off the job since October 15th.”
Finding skilled labour is not expected to be an issue as Everitt expects those who left the community to find other work, will return.  There are plenty of unemployed skilled workers available from Mackenzie and Prince George. But Everitt says, for Ft. St. James, this is good news “These people have been waiting since last fall for some good news, and here it is.”
The Pope and Talbot Receiver, Price Waterhouse, also applied to the court today to keep the Canfor chip supply agreement in place until the Mackenzie pulp mill could be sold. That matter has been put over to next week.

Are there any customers for the wood?
Best news for Fort St. James all year!
Mackenzie, get everyone on the phone and offer to buy the chips, let's get each other's backs and go to work!
The chips ex FSJ are only a small % of what Mackenzie requires.
Trucking chips from FSJ to Mackenzie is not a competitive option.
Chips can be traded like they were in the past. FSJ chips to PG in exchange for perhaps Bear Lake or Chetwynd chips to Mackenzie. Maybe Canfor Mackenzie chips to Mackenzie, there's a competitive option.
"Maybe Canfor Mackenzie chips to Mackenzie, there's a competitive option."

yes but this is what Canfor is in court trying to exit.
Good news for the Fort!
Like I wrote in earlier comments about Canfor's "windup" party in Mackenzie, July 12 for all employees.
The mills will not open irregardless of the chip contract agreement.

CanFor will pay retribution whether it's $80,000 or $100,000 a month for the chips to whoever buys the P&T pulpmill.
It's cheaper than running the mills with a loss of over $1.8 millon a month!
P&T pulpmill in Mackenzie owes Canfor over $5 million for chips so doubtful Canfor will have to worry about paying anything. More than likely Canfor would just setup a chipper if they have to honour the chip contract.
