#102 Being consistently ripped off by corrupt politicians at the federal, provincial and local levels and have grown to accept it as being normal and just the way it is. ( Can anyone name a political party that has been in power that hasn't had a period of corruption ? Granted there might have been no convictions but when you are a politician and all your friends are fellow politicians, lawyers, heads of state and other big wigs, the law doesn't really involve you).
good one lunarbase......
Bob, the name people selected and the government rejected as the new name for the NWT, was my choice.
Stompin Tom should be #1...
Well for # 102: There is nothing like the sound of the "Taser" zapping someone in the crisp morning air that makes me think of home and what it is to be a Kanadian.

So my vote goes to the "Zzzzaappp.....Aaahhh"
That will teach you to ask what you did wrong.
My vote for the number one position: "We love clear cuts more than anyone... except maybe Brazil."
I can't believe how Tim Hortons made it on the list of 101 things that most define Canada.

It's been American owned for quite a few years now.

Amazing how myths like *Tim Hortons being Canadian* can survive in the minds of people.
God what a lame-ass country. How utterly embarrassing.
to all the about posters.....is there any subject that could illicit a 'positive' response for any of you? I'd like to wish you a happy day...but somehow, i doubt that is possible. cheers :-)
should read...all the above posters....
Why raise an American owned corporation to the status of a Canadian icon? Isn't it better to be informed beforehand than to be red faced after it's too late?

Eve, what is YOUR positive suggestion?
You are right diplomat!
Putting Timmy's on the list is a bit embarrassing!
What were people thinking?
Who cares who administers Tim Hortons? The Timmies EXPERIENCE has always been owned by Canadians.
The T-Ho "experience" is nothing to be proud of.
number 2 says it for all cunucks.....vote 2
oops IMO vote #2.....Hey Eve, are you the leading by example? :-)
difficult if one starts at 101 on the list ....

many of the items on the first 100 really do not define Canada since many other countries have universal healthcare, as an example. That is really a list of us versus the USA who, by the way, also have the Rockies.

So, the first 100 really is not even a Canadian list.

How about Quebec Winter Carnival ...
"Who cares who administers Tim Hortons? "

I don't. But I do care who OWNS it, because as an American owned company it may belong on an American 101 list, but not on a Canadian one.

I believe (perhaps mistakenly) that the list is supposed to be for Canadian things that actually define Canada...

The whole exercise is a bit childish anyways.

How about a survey about things that REALLY matter, like useless opinion surveys?
How about Freedom?
Useless opinion survey ....

Number one on that list for me right now would be the dangerous goods survey to an anonymous general public.

In my opinion, such routes should be selected on factual data based on such simple things as:

1. nature of dangerous good
2. number and size of shipments per season
3. origin and destination
4. route options
5. type of sensitive receptors adjacent to possible routes
6. intrinsic route safety
7. etc. etc.

Then take it out to the public for final vetting to make sure nothing was missed.

So ..... I think the opinion poll that is out there right now is about the level that public opinion polls are useful for .... useless things!

LOL
"Snowbirds" ... I think anything that needs explaining to non-Canadians does not belong on the list.

I have heard there is nothing on the original list that originates with First Nations ..... actually maple syrup (57 on list) does, but then people really do not care about that.

So, how about

1. Inut stone sculpture
2. Birch bark canoe
3. maple syrup
4. igloo
5. inukshuk (symbol of Vancouver Olympics)

Interesting how stupid the public can actually be. They need a list, then they can choose and add a few others. Otherwise the most obvious does not appear.

Better to ask a European of what they think defines Canada.
Hey eve .... you seem to be one of those negative posters that has no postive alternative ...... sort of like backstab and run ....

;-)
not really owl....i just find that regardless of the topic its always the same people..i appreciate reading your posts because you always back up your statements. I don't have any answers or solutions for many of the problems that exist in our community, which is why i never post on those. But for these type of topics, i just thought it was for a bit more of a patriotic spin than anything else...so more on my thoughts on this? How about...i feel thankful to live in a country that lets me voice my thoughts and have opinions. I am thankful that i have a roof over my head and food in my fridge, and live in a beautiful city with friends and family that make me happy.
eve ....

first, thank you for responding ...

second, thank you for responding in the way you did, even after I made the post I did ...

I think if I did not feel the way you do about this community, I would not have stayed here for the time I have. In fact, I am not planning to leave.

I also think every place can stand improvements. As well, everyone has a different view of what they like and those things they feel can be improved.

I am one of those who likes to strive for improvements. It actually makes me happy to do that, especially when I see that there are others who agree and I can see the fruits of my labour whether the others know about it or not.

Others are just happy to live one day after another and enjoy each day as it moves along. They are easy to please. In other words, not high maintenace like some people can be.

:-)
okay...my turn!

Our toonie and loonie!!
How about our Grey Cup winding up in Alabaster, Connecticut one day? It happened to our Lord Stanley's cup. It's just a matter of time. Canadian time, eh?
errrrr....Land Claims
Heehee!
Here is an interesting land claim ...
cranbrook hil road blocked at the otway end by a person who claims the city road is trespassing his property ... hydro and gas got easements, but the city simply uses the property ......

seems first nations are not the only one that blockade roads due to land claims .... :-)

ooops ... make that hydro and telus ...
