97 Closure Update

Monday, February 2, 2015 @ 3:26 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Highway 97  south of the Red Rock Scales, remains closed following the roll over of a chemical tanker truck.

The driver of the truck has been taken  to hospital with serious injuries.

The rollover was discovered around 1:30 this afternoon by a  member of the Prince George RCMP on Highway 97 near Bellos Road, south of Prince George.

The tanker truck is bearing a placard indicating it is transporting or was recently transporting Ammonium Nitrate, a poisonous and explosive chemical. This portion of Highway 97 is closed until the scene is deemed safe and the tractor / trailer removed. Personnel from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Highways are on scene.

I thought ammonium nitrate was fertilizer.

It technically is fertilizer but it’s used as an explosive agent. It’s mixed with fuel oil (desiel or kerosene) at the site where the blast is proposed. Ammonium nitrate is used for explosives because it’s relativly stable and safe to transport..you need a high charge detonator to set it off..
