Teachers Janice Elsenheimer and Jeannie McDonald attend the candlelight rally
Prince George, B.C.- Members of the Prince George District Teachers Association held a candlelight rally this evening outside the School District 57 Head office. About 150 people took part in the rally that was attended by teachers and supporters.
As Trustees prepared for their inaugural meeting inside the building, the members of the PGDTA said they want to “shine the spotlight on conditions in our schools.”
The PGDTA says public schools need Trustees “who will champion a strong and stable education system that meets the needs of every child.”
Speakers talked about how a teacher in Lethbridge is paid $20 thousand dollars more per year than a teacher doing the same job in Prince George. "A Fair Deal" participants chanted.
The teachers in B.C. have yet to reach a new agreement with the Province. The teachers have been pressing for salary and benefit increases as well as prep time. They also say they want a collective agreement that provides “local solutions for local problems”.

Have you been to Lethbridge? I would want more money too.
If teachers in Lethbridge are being paid $20K more than teachers in PG, that only tells me that teachers in Lethbridge are overpaid by about $30K.
I still don’t understand how shoveling more money at the teachers will help the education system.
This reminds me of a teacher my daughter had in kindergarten Mrs M. My daughter was having trouble one day with the zipper on her jacket. Rather the teacher help out with the zipper she sent a note home explaining that we should teach our children about zippers
That just proves how lazy she really is.
On that note I think that teacher is really overpaid.
How come teachers are always getting slammed and UNBC and all its golden paychecks seems untouchable?
C`mon Gus. Where`s the stats?
Compare: Tradesman – start apprentice program and start getting paid on day one. After 4 years, they are a tradesman and getting full wages. Teacher – start university and has to pay large dollars each year. After 5 years, you are allowed to apply for jobs. Several years as a sub and you may get hired. Then, you get starting wage and it takes you another 8 years to get to your full salary.
Teachers are under paid. Instead of teacher bashing, maybe you should look at it from new shoes. You know, walk a mile in my shoes. Anyone wanting to go into teaching today, should take a second look. Many trades are just as rewarding and pay far more.
Maybe Ben should get a hold of the PGDTA and get a copy of the current pay schedule and let people see how it works. Not all teachers receive the same remuneration.
Boy that`s 20 years. Maybe you should try a trade, I did. I dare you to follow me and my smaller paycheck. lol
Found what looks like the most current pay schedule http://www.bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/Publications/ResearchReports/2011-TS-01.pdf
Teachers here should be thinking it`s nice that they can still count there sheckles.
Try putting as much energy into doing you job as you do complaining that your sooo hard to do and do a better job that matches your pay rate.
If you dont like the job or pay…GET ANOTHER JOB!!!
WHOLY SHPIT IN THE BUCKET!!!
Give me one of those starting salary positions so I can sit on my fat doughnut eating a** and watch your kids read all day and I`ll do it.And I wont send home stupid notes with your kids telling you they smell and you dress them funny…
Business is a little slow this week. Oh, I know – I’ll hold a candlelight vigil. And to think I was just about to hold my breath until I turned blue.
If it gets a little bit colder maybe them folks can hold a “propane heater vigil”.
I say pay teachers baby sitter wages because that’s what they are, baby sitters.
So lets see what would it cost to pay teachers baby sitter wages. No paid breaks no paid holidays. Just the going daycare rate of 25.00 per day per kid. As a matter of fact the YMCA in PG charges about 30.00 per day per kid (44.75 for 9 hours. PER KID) . And lets not pay them for summer holidays or Christmas breaks or spring break. So about 9 months per year.
Average class 25 kids. 25×25=625.00 per day. 5 Days per week x625= 3125/week. 4 weeks per month X3125= 12500/month and they only get paid 9 months remember? 9×12500= 112,500. The average teacher makes no where near that amount of money.
So why are people willing to pay 895.00 per month per kid (YMCA PG daycare rates for 9 hour day) for baby sitting but not anywhere near that for the baby sitter they send them everyday to called school.
I say pay the teachers baby sitter wages because that’s what they really are.

With your off spring thatâs all that would be needed. Your kids probably wouldnât need a teacher.
