Food for Fare Returns

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 @ 3:57 AM

Prince George, BC – The City of Prince George and Prince George Transit are launching their “Food for Fare” initiative from Thursday, December 15  through to  Sunday the 18th.

Transit users can donate a non-perishable food item on any Prince George Transit bus and in exchange, they will get to ride the bus for free.

All items collected will be donated to the Salvation Army  to help with their  programs this season.   P.G. Transit spokesperson, Dave Bradshaw says  the effort last year resulted in several boxes loaded with goodies being delivered to the Salvation Army, and he is hoping for an even better  result this year.

Bradshaw says he isn’t certain on how much the  food for fare  program costs the City.  He  says it  you liken it  to the  "Free Fare  For Clean Air" program that  is in place when there is an air quality  advisory, then perhaps  it would  be a little less than the $1200-$1500 dollars a day  in cash  fares not collected  during those events.  He says not everyone during the Christmas food campaign will  opt to  donate a food  item to ride for free and many already have  a monthly  pass.
