Canadian Blood Services Urging PG Residents To Give ‘Perfect Gift’

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 @ 3:52 AM

Prince George, B.C. –  Canadian Blood Services is urging local residents to take one hour before the end of the year to give the ‘perfect gift’ this holiday season.

CBS spokesperson, Tamara Sweet, acknowledges that collecting blood at this time of year is a challenge as many donors are busy with family activities or may be travelling.  She says nearly 30-thousand units of blood will need to be collected across the country between today and New Year’s Eve to meet the needs of hospital patients.

Sweet says, in Prince George, there are still 135 open appointments between now and the end of the year.  "While donations drop at this time of year, the need remains constant," she says.  "Procedures that require blood products – cancer treatments, organ transplants, and cardiac surgeries – all continue to take place, even on Christmas and New Year’s Day."

To book an appointment, please visit us online at www.blood.ca or call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

The Prince George clinic (2277 Westwood Drive) will be open:

       – today – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

        Thursday, Dec. 22 – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
        Wednesday, Dec. 28 – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
       Thursday, Dec. 29 – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. – greatest need!

Maybe blood Services could get more blood in BC if they serviced the NorthWest and the Northeast.

I doubt too many people in Fort St John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd will make a special trip to PG to give a pint.

I also doubt too many people in Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Smithers will come to PG to donate either.

Or maybe they can enlist the help of Japanese scientists to synthesize blood. They could call this synthetic blood, “True blood.”
