Terrace, B.C. – RCMP in Terrace say two officers were injured when their cruiser was rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver late last night.
Police say Constable Philip Crack and Auxiliary Constable Shelley Ullery were parked at the side of Highway 16, near Ferry Island, monitoring traffic, when a white van lost control and smashed into the back of their vehicle. According to Terrace RCMP’s Media Relations Officer, Constable Angela Rabut, the van had been clocked on radar at over 120-kilometres per hour in the 50k/hr zone just seconds prior to the crash.
Constable Rabut says both officers and the driver of the van were all taken to Mills Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and later released.
"This could have been tragic," says Terrace Detachment Commander, Inspector Dana Hart. "Especially at this time of year. Both Constable Crack and Auxiliary Constable Ullery have families. Just like all of members, they are out there risking their lives to keep others safe."
North District West Traffic Services Sergeant Pam Scott adds, "This is exactly why our members are out in full force during the holiday season."
"Some people just don’t seem to get the message – drunk driving injures and kills." Police say damage to both vehicles is extensive.
35-year-old David Schiffer from the Czech Republic is facing numerous charges including impaired driving and dangerous driving. Schiffer is currently working in Terrace.

Oops! How embarrassing, eh?
RCMP probably running with no lights on as they usually do in inclimate weather. Might screw up their emergency lights. That’s what I was told when I posed the question yeras ago as to why RCMP don’t drive with their headlights on.
Just wondering.
But sure enough it’s got to be embarassing LOL
I think you need to read it again before you blame the rcmp
A drunk driver rear-ended an RCMP cruiser, and people are blaming the RCMP? Get a life. They were just doing their jobs and nearly had their lives taken by a reckless criminal.
We could be reading a very different story today, about some innocent family being killed by this idiot. He should have any work visas cancelled and sent back to the Czech Republic and told never to come back.
Speedy recovery to both members from any injuries sustained, and a heartfelt thanks for routinely putting yourselves into potentially hazardous situations to serve the public. Unlike what the vocal minority would make it seem, the majority of the public is very grateful for it.
One things for sure. Theres no way the van was doing 120 just seconds before the impact or the car wouldn’t look quite that good.
Wait a minute, first we got to pay about ten grand of our hard earned tax dollars so this criminal that is most likely guilty seeing how both him and the driver were sent to the same hospital. Then we got to spend another 20 grand for a deportation hearing including as many appeals he can squeeze out before this person who is more than likely a criminal in his own country takes refuge in a church…
Read full story in reports to come, and dont act surprised…
One thing for sure, that Crown Vic is one tough car. It’s too bad they stopped making them this year. Bad way to end the year, I hope the officers make a full and speedy recovery.
acrider54, you didn’t even read the full article before you jumped at the chance to criticize RCMP did you? Obviously not as the article clearly states they were PARKED at the side of the highway. Good going hot shot.
Lighten up I’m just stating a fact, who’s blaming the RCMP?
wonder what would happen if one of us did this in his country or any other country.
I say deport him, no trial if medical reports indicate that he was drunk.
maybe seize his bank account, if he has one here, to help pay for the damages and send him on his way.
Simple I think, and then maybe others would think twice about abusing our systems and claiming ignorant to our laws.
welcome to 2012 as I see it.
Cheers
