Canada Winter Games a Festival Too

Wednesday, January 4, 2012 @ 9:11 AM

Prince George B.C.- The importance of the  23 athletic competitions at the 2015 Canada Winter Games is not lost on Games CEO Stuart Ballantyne “Getting kids involved in sports is good for their health, their mental health and their sense of belonging.”

Speaking on the Meisner program this morning on CFISFM, the Winter Games will also present 18 days of cultural activity. Ballantyne says the Games will present an opportunity to showcase the talent of the region as there will be  music and celebrations daily in the City.

While the Games will see a major refurbishing of the Kin Centre, Ballantyne says the City is actually in pretty good shape as it has most of the facilities needed to host the 23 different events.

With the advent of social media, every athlete has an opportunity to share their personal accomplishments with their friends and family. That same social media can open the  eyes of people right across the country to the beauty and opportunities in Prince George and the region.

“The north has a spirit, it has a sense of belonging. The Games are more of a regional games, so in addition to Prince George, this is an opportunity for many communities to shine.”

“The Games are going to work well, no matter how many bumps in the road we face between now and 2015.”

Stu is the perfect guy to head up the 2015 Games. If you ever meet him, he is a great listener, and has an open mind for making these the best games ever. I believe that under his leadership, they will be the best games ever.

Amen. Let’s hope this community gets behind the Games and shows Canada that we are much more than some crime ridden city they read about in a magazine.

Not to worry, the average person does not read about PG, at least not to the point where it sticks for long.

So, right now is not too early to start scouting for promotional location shots.

I recall taking a CBC film crew around a few years ago to provide some background video images for a national quiz show for opening and closing sequences. When the weather and lighting is right PG can be made to look like a city one would want to visit or move to.

Prince George, didnt that place get flooded out years ago.

Prince George ? Nah, I heard somebody stole it.

Gus is right… having media knowing where to get their video shots from in order to show PG in the right kind of light is probably one of the most important things PG could get out of the games. PG could challenge any city in Canada in a picture for picture stand off at the right times of season in the right locations with a good photographer.

A role the city could play is making some of our more spectacular viewing locations more accessible as scenic locations. Those are some of the things most new visitors to a city look for.

You know, I hate to be a damp blanket on things, but one thing. It’s January 4th and it was +7 this afternoon. Now if it was 2015 today, do we have a contingently plan? Winters in Prince George have been really erratic lately…remember the winter Olympics in Vancouver?
