Prince George, B.C. – A suspect arrested in connection with a suspicious house fire on Merritt Road early Saturday has now been charged.
The 49-year-old man, said by police to be associated with the residence in question, has been charged with one count of arson and remains in police custody. It is not known at this time whether further charges will be laid. The suspect was arrested yesterday morning following a 3 a.m. fire that did considerable damage to the upper level of a large house. Firefighters arriving to fight the blaze found an elderly man inside the structure. He was rescued and rushed to University Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Names of the suspect and the 85-year-old victim have not been released as the RCMP Serious Crime Unit continues its investigation.
The man facing the arson charge will appear in Prince George Provincial Court tomorrow.
