Bell Willing to Meet with Protesters

Thursday, January 12, 2012 @ 3:34 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Minister of Jobs Innovation and Tourism, Pat Bell, says he is more than willing to meet with protestors who have blocked highway 27 for the better part of two days now.

“I understand the RCMP have been negotiating, and I am willing to talk. I am not aware of this group having requested previous discussions, but I am willing to help resolve this situation.”

Bell says he understands the diesel supply in Fort St. James is running low, and he would like to see the situation resolved as soon as possible. There has been no time set for the requested discussions and Bell says he  doesn’t know if the blockade will be removed before those talks take place.

The blockade of highway 27 thorough Fort St. James, was brought front and centre to the Natural resources forum in Prince George today.

Following a panel discussion on mining, a First Nations woman stepped up to the mic. Instead of asking a question, she told the panel “I want to thank the forum organizers for all the First Nations panel members over the past two days” she was being sarcastic, as there have been no First Nations participants on the panels. She declared support for the members of the Nak’azdli  who started the blockade of highway 27 yesterday, and their right to a share in the resource revenue before turning and leaving the room.

The blockade has about  14 protesters blocking highway 27 to industrial traffic. In addition to demanding to speak to Pat Bell, they have also demanded a discussion with  Skeena Bulkley MP Nathan Cullen.

The protesters are now allowing 2 trucks though every two hours.

The protesters actions have not been approved by the Nak’azdli band.

Comments

No negotiations are needed. Arrest them, they are committing a crime.

“I want to thank the forum organizers for all the First Nations panel members over the past two days”

Perhaps there was no one from First Nations qualified to be on a panel? Just a thought.

Yes Mr. Bell you give them what ever you like. After all our pockets are very deep and we are willing to contribute. Tounge in cheek.

And I hope 250 means highway 27 not 97 because I’ll just drive right through.

“I want to thank the forum organizers for all the First Nations panel members over the past two days”

This lady hit the nail on the head. If these projects are really going to have a true benefit the north, they need to include the deep particpation of the First Nations communities they are located in.

Actually…John Rustad is the MLA for Fort St.James.
He doesn’t seem to know where that is,but it is within his riding.
I notice the protestors didn’t ask to speak to him?

Enbridge claims they will only spill 5000 barrels of oil in BC per year..5000 too many.

The peanut gallery has spoken

it sounds like this blockade is not approved by the KAKazdli band counsel so why isn’t it removed by the RCMP. it would be different if it was a group of people involved in an information picket but this is a criminal act preventing people from going about their buisness. anyone born in this country owns the same rights as these protesters so why can’t we blockade highways when we are upset or see an oportunity to gain something for nothing. I call it all BS and enough is enough, throw them in jail, opps jails are full, courts are back logged, guess we have created quite a pickel for ourselves.

BCBound, I feel your comments are offensive, please feel free to keep that opinion to yourself.
I agree, Curmudgeon, not to invite or include members of First nations is just plain dumb.
By the way, I’m not native, just yer average taxpayer.

The Forum is nothing more than a **love in** for Corporations, and their buddies the Liberal Government.

They spew BS about all the great things they are going to do, however most of it will be done by the generous contributions of BC Taxpayers.

This is the 9th annual Forum. Anyone anywhere remember anything about the previous 8? I doubt it.

As opposed to the O250 forum which seems to be a big love in for liberal haters and those who think money grows on magical trees without corporations, eh Palupo ;-)

I have been anticipating a new third party in B.C., one with fresh ideas and without any of the skeletons in the closet which both the NDP and the Liberals have accumulated over the last few decades!

So far, nothing!

Interceptor, I agree! If Dix would be holding this annual Forum the usual anti-liberal hate posters would be falling all over themselves applauding every single
same announcement!

I say it again: Both the NDP and the Liberals have their skeletons! BOTH!

The peanut reacts, eer stump, I mean rubber tires and popsicle sticks..

I`m glad BC bound`s comment was removed..

The BC Liberals deserved to be tossed, and, they will indeed be blasted out of office with a thud.

Oil was $25 dollars a barrel in 2001, Alberta had huge surpluses in 2001, now let`s jump to 20111-2012…Oil is $100 dollars per barrel and Alberta is running a $4billion dollar deficit, the Federal CONservatives are running deficits in the $50 billion dollar range.

Why?, What happened, the answer is corporate loopholes and royalty schemes that fail, there will be no economic boom with Tar oil from Alberta, just pollution and environmental disasters..

Big oil only pays royalties on cash profit, big oil finds ways to show deficits, therefor no royalties…

Same with BC natural gas royalties, BC will lose money on Natural gas, no royalties this year..

What`s the latest price..$2.68 per unit.

One tanker spill of size will cost BC taxpayers at least $30 billion dollars, $30 billion and it won`t get cleaned up, everyone who would lose their livlihood would be shit out of luck..

Exxon mobile STILL hasn`t paid the fine($5 billion) from the 1989 spill, their lawyers are reducing the payment through pure dollar value..

The lawyers don`t cost the oil companies anything, because, because they are permanent staff.

Cheers

Interceptor. I dont have any problem with business or corporations making a huge profit in this Province. What I am against is all the attendent BS that goes with it.

They never try the truth as a first option. All this crap about the big housing boom is China, is not true. The lumber is low grade, not planed, and used for concrete forming. I suspect that by this time China has enough stored to last them for years to come. They picked it all up cheap. We got a deal because the trees would have rotted.

Why cant they just be truthful. Ie; We got cheap stumpage from the Government on beetle killed trees, which allowed us to clear cut huge blocks of timber. We were able to get the stumpage rate of .025 per cubic metre to apply on the good timber that was in these cut blocks. We were then able to sell the bad/rough lumber to China to offset our production costs, and sell some good beetle kill, and some high grade lumber to the US for a higher price than China. We were able to circumvent the Free Trade Agreement to some extent.

The Americans have already filed a complaint against BC for circumventing the FTA, and it is almost a given that they will win. If so, it will cost us approx $400 Million dollars, however they made a hell of alot more than that so they dont care.
Lee Iaccoca once said that most of the CEO’s in the US were idiots. I agree with him, and suspect that most in Canada are also.

I would never support the NDP because they are worse than the Liberals, however the Liberals are a terrible bunch of b……., who think that they can screw us every which way but loose. They have totally lost control of the Province and our finances.

We need to get rid of them, pure and simple. A third party would be the best option, however I doubt if we could be so lucky. What we will end up with is some of these Liberals joining forces with however many Conservatives get elected, and they will try and form the next Government.

Coming clean, and being honest, and upfront, could get Christy re-elected, but she wuld have to get started right now. First item is get rid of the HST NOW. Then quit lying about the deficit, and how much money the Government brings in.

Then lets get some true numbers of the cost of the Olympics, and while we are at it the total cost of the Sea to Sky Highway, and how it will be paid for. (Shadow tolls). Then throw in BC Place roof, and New Ferries, and the total amount of money that has been transferred from BC Hydro, and ICBC to general revenue.

Then lets look at the 15% tax that has been assessed on all the lumber to the USA since 2006. This money was collected by the Cdn Revenue Agency at the border, and returned to BC to the tune of approx $260 Million dollars per year.(Roughly $1.5 Billion over 6 years) This is a huge amount of money, that they dont talk about. In fact it comes under **other revenue** Plus the $800 Million per year additional revenue they take in from the HST (revenue neutral??)

Another huge lie is the Liberals say that they have decreased taxes. This is true, however they do not mention that while reducing taxes, they were increasing user fees, and at the end of the day they probably collect more money than before.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. These guys have got to go.

reverend

hey criminal, you could put your knowledge of alberta’s royalty system on the head of a pin. Your an uninformed, brainwashed joke.

How about taxpayers blockading the Simon Fraser bridge for a while and make Patty Bell listen to our observations about the pokey demise of our HST? Think we would get any sympathy?

Dow7500…I have been patient, you are obviously stunned, you blather away while proving zero facts, you are a factless troll.

It`s you that knows nothing about Alberta royalties, here1s another lesson for you..

Royalties Down 32%, Billions
in Federal Revenue Lost
OIL BOOMS:
O V E R H A U L I N G T H E R O YA LT Y A N D TA X T R E AT M E N T O F A L B E R TA’ S O I L S A N D S
Record oil prices, record oil sands production,
record profits for companies, and yet Alberta’s
oil sands royalty return per barrel is down 32%,
and the federal government has lost up to
$1.65 billion to oil sands tax breaks.
Since 1997, when the current royalty regime was
implemented, capital investments in oil sands projects
have increased more than 300% and oil sands
production has increased 88%. By 2004, production
surpassed one million barrels per day – a production
target that was originally set for 2020. In
just one decade, the price of oil has increased 214%.
While the low royalty rates and federal tax break
were deemed necessary in the early days of oil sands
developments, they have outlived their purpose.
The low royalty rates mean that between
1996 and 2005 royalty revenue paid to
Albertans declined by 32% from $3.39
to $2.29 per barrel of oil
______________________________________________________________
Well there it is, the price of oil has skyrocketed and royalties to Actual Albertans has fallen, fallen aplenty, and the same goes to the Federal Government, as production increases in the oil sands, which it has year after year the Federal Government is making less and less, at the rate it`s falling even the vast Oilsands are soon to be a welfare industry….Perhaps you think I`m over-stating the case, well, here`s a little more Pembina for you…
____________________________________________________________
It’s bad enough that oil sands royalties
are declining as oil sands production
goes up and oil companies reap windfall
profits. Now cost over-runs for the
construction of new oil sands projects,
brought on by an economy that has
been overheated by the pace of development,
are further reducing royalties
and taxes that Alberta and the federal
government should be receiving.
Cost over-runs mean oil companies
stay at the 1% royalty rate longer
before jumping to the 25% rate,
which means Albertans get less
revenue today.
Even when companies do get to the
25% rate, it is based on their net
income so higher expenses means
even less revenue for the resource
owners, the public.
Cost over-runs also cost Canadians
money. This is because federal taxes
are reduced or deferred because of
the sweetheart deal that enables oil
sands companies to write off 100%
of their capital costs.
This means taxpayers subsidize not
only the start-up of the oil sands industry
but continue to subsidize project
expansions too. And now that the
industry is getting too big, too quickly,
Canadian taxpayers are also on
the hook for cost over-runs resulting
from an overheated economy

Nuckledragging fool

To me what differentiated High Speed Universities from a plethora of other online schools was the regional accreditation, competency based programs and the how fast you can get the degree.

Natural gas prices crash, BC makes nothing, loses money!…$2.66 per unit.

Why should our MLA meet with criminals? They should be charged with mischief under the laws of BC. peroiod. ni if ands or buts. Aiding and abetting a crime in this province is also an offense, so anyone in power that tells the RCMP out there not to inforce our laws is also a criminal.
And by the way, the natives in this area do get a share of the wealth from natural resources. A most disproportionately high share for little or no contribution whatsoever.

Yes, let’s condemn the people doing this while we continue to do nothing at all.
Oh wait, we built pricey new townhouses right where they can watch the trucks leave town and jake brake for Cottonwood Park and the big corner. As if there’s anyone left here to buy one.
And we’re not sitting waiting for gov’t handouts. We’re waiting for corporate handouts from the mine! Real big difference, people.

Criminalmind (Grant G) = Spam spam spam spam spam.

Just because you have a blog, it doesn’t make you an authority on anything.

By the look of your posts, you prove me right again and again. Go ahead, keep on making outlandish claims.

How long until we see you banned from this site for your continued personal attacks?

dow posts one comment vs. criminalminds several insults and that’s the one you focus on? Hopefully you were just being sarcastic.

Thanks Dragon, let them boys make asses out of themselves, they post nothing, they just fling insults and innuendo..

This site, opinion250 has always been like that, home to rightwing ideologues..

I don`t argue with them anymore, you`ll never convince them of anything, you could show them the sun and they would declare it`s the moon.

Hence the stump, rubber tires and cement block reference, it`s useless arguing with those inanimate objects too, stumps don`t change their minds.

“This site, opinion250 has always been like that, home to rightwing ideologues..”

Um, no. Mostly tree huggers and other assorted lefties around here. Not as eco-radical as you mind you, but definitely left leaning.

You just can’t get one thing right, can you? Keep trying.
