Province Reinstates Groups Eligible For Gaming Grants
Prince George, B.C. – As a result of the provincial government’s Community Gaming Grant Review, not-for-profit groups that focus on adult arts and sports, animal welfare, and environmental concerns are once again eligible for funding.
In releasing the findings of an independent review conducted by Skip Triplett last summer, the province has announced gaming grants will be bumped up by $15-million dollars to a total of $135-million dollars for this fiscal year.
In addition, the eligibility of hundreds of non-profit organizations has been reinstated and a special intake of applications for grants begins tomorrow and runs through to February 13th to ensure these groups are eligible for funding this fiscal year. (Interested organizations must apply online at www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming/grants/community-gaming.htm)
Out of the $15-million, $6-million is allocated for adult arts, culture and sport organizations, while $2-million will support not-for-profits like animal shelter organizations, fish and wildlife associations, and lake and stream stewardship societies. The remaining $7-million dollars in additional fund will be used to increase funding to groups that have experienced cutbanks over the past three years – fairs, festivals, youth arts and culture, the BC Senior Games and community educaiton organizations.
"Through an open public engagement process, we heard from more than 1700 British Columbians about what we can do to improve our gaming grant system," says Premier Christy Clark. "We listened and we’re taking action."
Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Ida Chong, says, "Non-profits do tremendous work for British Columbians. In some communities, they are the sole service providers, ensuring BC families have access to important resources that improve their quality of life."
Starting tomorrow not-for-profit groups focusing on adult arts and sports, animal welfare, and environmental concerns will be able to apply for

I didn’t know they had called an election. What is the date?
Have to agree with the above, here comes the promises they won’t deliver on if elected.
Big deal. It’s all smoke and mirrors. If I am correct, three years ago these grants were in the range of 150 million a year. They were cut back and the past couple of years there has been a big deal made over increasing these grants. They are still below what they had been. I guess we have to pay for the olympics before we look after peoples needs. The Libs have made a good chunk of change on the backs of seniors and non profits. Similar to the still remaining HST. You go Christy Campbell.
This thread goes to show that you can’t please some people no matter what you do.
Reinstating money that you reduced previously is just smoke and mirrors. Especially if it takes place before an election.
Lets use the minimum wage. The Liberals did not increase it for 9 years. Plus they brought in the training wage of $6.00 per hour. Then when they finally got around to increasing the minimum wage, they run around pounding their chests, and giving the impression they did a good thing. They did. The problem is it took them 9 years to do it.
We have the election coming, and we will get more of these announcements as we go along. If they were to announce the immediate withdrawal of the HST they might stand a chance. Seems they are destined for the dustbin of history.
“Reinstating money that you reduced previously is just smoke and mirrors. Especially if it takes place before an election.”
What does ‘before an election’ mean? 2 years before? I would say that it is always before an election to some extent.
Anyway, people complained when the funding was taken away. Now that it’s back, people still don’t seem to be happy.
You Palopu, are the prime example of someone who’s never happy, at least by what I gather through your posts on here. I hope you’re not like this in ‘real life’. Life’s too short.
I’m like Palopu…..I will never be happy either until this corupt government and every incumbant Liberal MLA is replaced. There is nothing this Liberal government could do to change my happiness before the next provincial election!
