Despite Cold, Schools Open, Buses Running
Foothills Elementary, like all others in SD57, remains open in spite of extreme cold
Prince George, B.C. – Gone are ‘Snow Days’ and school closures due to extremely cold temperatures…
This week’s deep freeze has, so far, not had much of an impact on daily operations at schools within District #57.
Superintendent, Brian Pepper, says the district’s website was recently updated with a reminder to parents about its Winter Weather Policy. "Basically, we don’t close the schools because of cold weather," says Pepper. "Likewise, we don’t cancel bus service because of cold weather."
But Pepper emphasizes the decision to keep a student home because of winter weather rests with the parent.
He says the board office is alerted when any school has an absentee rate above 10-percent of the total student population. Pepper says he’s only aware of one school in that predicament this week.
He points out it’s a very important time of the year for secondary schools, with just this week and next before first semester exams begin.

This once again proves that PG is a much tougher stock. Schools were closing down here in the lower mainland because of a wee bit of snow, and it’s not that cold out. I was laughing.
Now if I could only teach them how to drive in snow….
