How Long Does It Take to Freeze an Egg?

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 @ 11:42 AM

Prince George, B.C. –  It is one of the more unusual questions I’ve been asked by an ‘outsider’, trying to get a grasp on just how cold minus-24, with an extreme wind chill is…

How long does it take to freeze an egg?  "Well, gee…I don’t exactly know," I said yesterday.

It hasn’t been something I’ve pondered, while trying to keep warm this week.  Or in all my years of living in Prince George, after growing up in Chetwynd, for that matter.

But the question definitely got me thinking…

I have heard about eggs frying on the sidewalk in extreme heat.  So how long would it take?

For a time-lapsed play-by-play you can click on the photo at right.

(*Spoiler Alert*)  I can now tell you it takes approximately 37-minutes to freeze an egg, and that a layer of ice will start to form on one cup of water in that amount of time, as well.  (The water was frozen solid after two hours)

After showing my nine-year-old son this video, he said, "Well, that’s 37-minutes of your life you’ll never get back."!!

I love that the 9 yr old said “that’s 37 minutes of your life you won’t get back.” Too funny.

I would have thought the egg would have frozen faster.
