Relay For LIfe Looks to Sign Up More Teams

Prince George, B.C.- The Relay For Life will celebrate its 20th anniversary in Prince George this year, and the doors will be open tomorrow night at the Canadian Cancer Society’s offices to help teams sign up early for the event.( at right, the Relay for Life kick off in 2010 photo- Opinion250 archive)
The relay, to be held May 12-13 this year at Masich Place Stadium, is the Canadian Cancer Society’s largest fundraiser. Every year, team-generated revenue is vital to the success of the event.
Last year, 121 teams generated $370,752 of the total event amount of more than $400 thousand.
This year, the Relay For Life organizing committee would like to see team registration numbers climb to at least 130. To encourage teams to sign up, a discounted early bird online registration fee of only $10 per participant is being offered. The discounted rate will be in effect until Jan. 31.
As an added incentive, each participant who registers by Jan. 31 will be entered in a draw to win an iPad. Teams that have at least 10 participants signed up by the 31st will also have the chance to win a luxury tent at the Relay.
From Feb. 1 to March 30, the registration fee will jump to $15 per participant. After that, the cost will be $20.
Tomorrow, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. the local Canadian Cancer Society office (Suite 300, 500 Victoria Street), will hold an open house to provide an opportunity for teams to register online and pick up their team packages. As well, there will be live demonstrations of the Relay For Life website, a chance to share stories and to meet some of the Relay For Life volunteers.
Registering online is the most effective way to raise money.
Last year in BC and the Yukon, 71% of all participants registered online and they raised nearly double the amount of money as those who registered offline.
