Prince George, B.C. – The Chilliwack Chiefs got a pair of goals from Derek Huisman on their way to a 4-2 victory over the Prince George Spruce Kings Friday night. The victory earned the Chiefs a split with the Kings at the Coliseum and tightened the battle for third place in the Interior Conference. The Spruce Kings hold third by a point with 47 compared to 46 for the Chiefs.
The hometown club took the lead just 45 seconds into the game on a marker by Leo Fitzgerald. Spencer Graboski tied it at 10:12 and the clubs wrapped up the period square at 1. Huisman scored his first of the night on the power play at the eight minute mark of the second. That was the only goal of the period. Huisman scored again at 3:20 of the third, Myles Fitzgerald brought the Kings to within one at 14:57, but Malcolm Gould put it away for the Chiefs with an empty netter at 18:47. Gould had a goal and two assists on the night. Jarryd Ten Vanholt assisted on both Prince George goals and picked up three minor penalties while league scoring leader Paul De Jersey was held pointless and picked up two minors. A total of 19 minor penalties were handed out in the game, ten to the Chiefs. The Spruce Kings outshot Chilliwack 37-33, Mitch Gillam picking up the win in the Chiefs’ net. The Spruce Kings are off to Penticton for a 2pm contest Sunday afternoon. They’ll face the high-flying, first place Vees who blanked the Westside Warriors 4-0 Friday night in Penticton.
