Three More Burns Lake Victims Leave Hospital, Two Missing Identified

Sunday, January 22, 2012 @ 3:48 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Northern Health is providing another update on those injured in the explosion and fire at Babine Forest Products in Burns Lake Friday night. Originally 19 patients were transported to University Hospital in Prince George. NH was responsible for the treatment or transfer of 14 of those people as of late Saturday.

Jonathon Dyck with NH says today, one patient in stable condition was accepted for transfer from UHNBC to Vancouver General Hospital.   The transfer has been delayed by weather until Monday. Another 3 patients remain in stable condition in Prince George and three others have now been released from UHNBC. One patient is listed as stable at St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof. The total number of patients in NH care is 5, including the one to be transferred Monday.

Three patients have been transferred to VGH so far, and that increases to four tomorrow. Two patients have been sent to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, and one is at Royal Jubilee in Victoria.

Northern Health is extending its thanks to everyone, including physicians, nurses and emergency responders who worked tirelessly responding to the Burns Lake tragedy. NH is also passing on its sympathy to family, friends, the community of Burns Lake and the First Nations communities affected by the disaster.

Meantime the identities of the two men missing in the mill explosion have been released, although not by the RCMP. The two missing and feared deceased are Robert Luggi of Burns Lake and Carl Charlie. The search of the decimated sawmill for their remains is on hold until a structural engineer says the site is safe enough for investigators to enter. That may take days, according to RCMP Constable Lesley Smith.
