Burns Lake, B.C.- The delicate work of removing the human remains from the site of the former Babine Forest products sawmill, could be complete by the end of today.
The B.C. Coroners Service is hoping to have the remains off site today so the final tests for positive identification can be made as soon as possible.
Two workers died as a result of the blast and fire which destroyed the sawmill last Friday. Eleven other workers remain in hospitals in B.C. and in Alberta.
RCMP continue to work with the BC Coroners Service and Work Safe BC at the site. Prince George RCMP Forensic Identification Unit will be assisting the Coroners Service with the recovery of the remains.
All other agencies involved are take a collaborative approach in assisting with determining a cause of the explosion. Investigators advise this process could take months as the site is still very dangerous and the removal of debris and weak structure continues to pose challenges.
North District RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Lesley Smith says “There is no information to date that would support allegations of criminality.”
B.C.Coroners Service spokesperson Barb McLintock says it is too early to say if there will be a Coroners Inquest into the tragedy “Obviously that is something that is on everyone’s radar, but it is far too early in the investigation to say if an inquest would be called.”
