Smithers, B.C. – The Northern Lights Wildlife Society, Bear Rescue Facility has won a $140 thousand dollar share of the Aviva Canada Community Fund.
The volunteer based NLWS is a charity dedicated to rehabilitating injured and/or orphaned juvenile wildlife back into the wild. To aid in the growing demand on the bear rescue facility, the Aviva Community Fund will provide the resources to add fencing for a 10,000 square foot area, a shelter space and activity opportunities for the bears.
The money will mean the shelter will be able to add running water and power to the cub enclosure, provide stimulation for them and expand.
Right now the NLWS has 23 cubs in its care. The animals at the shelter come from all over the province, and NLWS provides care and shelter for cubs that are not able to survive on their own. When they are fit enough and old enough, they are released back into the wild.
Over the past two decades, the NLWS has saved 220 bears.
The Aviva Community Fund, created by property and casualty insurer Aviva Canada, is into its third year of awards . This year, 12 organizations received prize money.

Great news for a great organization. Keep up the good work.
This is such a well deserved donation. Hopefully it does not lead to the facility being full, with changes in attitudes as well as understanding and tolerance of our wildlife we can reduce the workload of these dedicated volunteers.
