Emergency Service Restored In Mackenzie

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 @ 8:20 AM

Prince George, B.C. –  Emergency phone service has been restored to the community of Mackenzie…

Mackenzie RCMP say repair crews were able to restore a fiber optic cable and telephone lines overnight that were severed when a logging truck hit a utility pole around 5pm last evening.

While the community had local phone service during that time – it could not receive or send long distance calls, and residents were being advised to phone the local detachment for Emergency Services, as 911 calls  weren’t going out to the North District RCMP’s Operational Communications Centre.

With the technology available there is no excuse for this sort of issue being an issue. Phone exchanges can be programmed to reroute calls even 911 can be rerouted within moments.

You never know when bad things will happen and in this case those few moments can feel like hours. This has been a concern for smaller communities for a long time when regional districts try to save some cash by centralizing dispatch services.

This should be a call to the folks of McKenzie, to put forward to the regional district directors. Essential services are just that essential and there should be no delay in being able to get the help you need when you need it. You don’t know it’s broken till you need it.

You are not getting it, when the Trunk Cable is cut in this Case by a Logging Truck this is it, sorry no re routing possible, this is the only Cable leaving Town, unless you would like to pay for another Route to leave Town, do you have another Highway leaving your community, I think not.
