Prince George, B.C. – The investigation to determine the cause of Tuesday morning’s house fire that claimed the lives of two infants in Mackenzie continues today.
Acting Regional Coroner Donita Kuzma says the B.C. Coroners Service is conducting the ongoing investigation, assisted by the Mackenzie Fire Department, a fire specialist from the Prince George Fire Department and the RCMP. Kuzma says the Coroners Service is in the process of arranging autopsies for the two victims of the fire. Those autopsies will be performed in Vancouver on Friday utilizing resources at the Coroners Service head office. Kuzma says the identities of the victims will be confirmed at that time, and, although names have been publicized in some media, she cannot and will not release names until confirmation comes at autopsy. Kuzma says if the victims are who they are believed to be, they are 22-month-old twins, a boy and a girl.
Five people were in the two-level house on Kerry Crescent when firefighters were dispatched at 7:33 Tuesday morning. Three people got out safely but the fire was raging too fiercely for anyone to reach the two babies on the second floor.
