UNBC Joins Top Employers Group

Prince George, B.C. – For the first time, the University of Northern British Columbia has been named one of BC’s top 100 employers. In fact, UNBC is only one of three organizations on the list outside of the lower mainland. BC’s Top Employers is an annual competition organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, recognizing those employers in BC that are industry leaders in offering exceptional places to work.
"We have known for a long time that UNBC is a desirable place to work,” says UNBC president George Iwama. “I’m so pleased that our faculty and staff are receiving this recognition because it is largely their efforts and dedication that make it so. UNBC is a passionate, hard-working community and we are honoured by this affirmation."
The editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers list several UNBC highlights:
BC’s employers are evaluated using eight criteria: physical workplace; work and social atmosphere; health, financial, and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which workplaces offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
A record 2750 companies and public sector organizations started the application procedure for the Top Employers competition. Others named to the Top 100 group include Telus Corporation, B.C. Lottery Corporation, B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch, UBC and MacDonald Dettwiler.

It’s amazing what an employer can do with the taxpayer’s money.
It is interesting that of the six names listed in this story, only two are not wholly funded or at least subsidized by public money.
I’d be interested to know what the staff benefits are like at the City of Prince George. The City has been going to the taxpayer well almost constantly for tax increases above inflation for the past decade…so their staff must enjoy some pretty premium perks. We already know that PG has more $75K+ and more $100K+ employees and managers than any other municipality in BC, on a per capita basis.
So I tend to agree with you faxman…when you have a seemingly never-ending back pocket to draw from, it’s pretty easy to offer some sweet benefits and incentives.
Other media on this story listed more than six names. Here are some of the top 100 in BC that are run by, or associated with BC tax dollars.
1. BC Assessments
2. BC Housing Management Commission
3. BC Hydro
4. BC Public Service
5. BC Liquor Distribution
6. BC Lottery Corp
7. BC Public School Employees Assoc.
8. BC Safety Authority
9. College of Physicians and Surgeons
10.BC Insurance Corp
11.:Provincial Health Authority.
There are about 28 Government entities or Government associated companies in the top 100. This would make up about 30%.
When you take into account that a lot of these Government entities are employers of a huge number of people you start to get a sense of just how expensive it is to have all these services provided by Government paid employees. Especially when they are the top receivers of the benefits and perks.

Have a nice day.
I dont think that the City is capable of giving out to many perks.Their inability to manage our money is a big problem.
They recently spent two million in legal costs alone and still have a number of cases coming up. They are just muddling through.
Cheers
Good post Palopu. If we keep it up with these public sector jobs with their fat wages and benefits, we’ll be going down the same road Greece went down soon enough.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons is funded and/or run by the Provincial Government.
