Green Ties – Fostering Connections In The Bid To Be A Green Leader

Monday, February 6, 2012 @ 8:44 AM

Prince George, BC – Canada’s Green University plays host to visiting university faculty members from one of the greenest cities in Europe this week…

Two senior faculty from Linnaeus University in the city of Växjö, in southern Sweden, are at UNBC’s Prince George campus until Thursday to explore opportunities for collaboration in engineering education and research related to wood construction, bioenergy and forest products. Bjorn Zethraeus is the founder of the bioenergy program in Växjö, which first started using biomass to produce heat and electricity in 1980 – as of last year, 80-percent of heat for the city was beig produced from renewable energy sources.

The city of 82,000 people is also developing a neighbourhood showcasing wood innovation, including two eight-storey apartment buildings built mostly from wood.  Thomas Thornqvist developed the local university’s education and research program on forest and wood technology.

UNBC President George Iwama says there are uncanny similarities between Linnaeus and UNBC, and between Växjö and Prince George.  "As we look to expand our programming in engineering and build upon our growing bioenergy program, there may be no better partner for us."

Their visit includes a public presentation this afternoon on how the Swedish energy system works, how biomass is used in their system and their experiences over the past several decades.  It begins at 1:30pm in Agora room 7-158.

Soooo, was that bio-energy system developed in the free market system or bottomless taxpayer money? I don’t know, just asking.

Why is UNBC so obsessed with being the greenest university? Just curious. Maybe having to do with seemingly unlimited tax payer money at the mere mention of the word green.

Anyhow read this somewhat related post which is out of Ontario but can be applied to BC, hang onto your wallets. Catch the paragraph on the oil pipeline.

I want a grant to explore alternative energies. The name of my company is ecogreenbiodiversitycarbonneutralfootprint inc. There I should have every bureaucrat knocking at my door before long.

The University would much rather talk about **green** and **bio Energy** etc; etc;,

Heaven forbid that they should talk about the reduction in enrolments for the past five years, the overfunding of the University by the Province, and the problems they are going to have with their budgets in the next few years. Better to stick with the hyperbole, and not get caught up in facts.

Maybe they should update their website. The last numbers for student enrolments is for 2010.

They have no time to keep their website up to date, they are too busy seeking grants for green initiatives.
In a few years this green movement will be out of fashion, mark my words.
