Prince George Family Killed In Highway Collision

Thursday, February 9, 2012 @ 6:36 PM
Prince George, B.C. – A Prince George family has been killed in a Highway 97 accident north of McLeese Lake

Around 9:30 this morning an S-U-V driven by 40-year-old Matt Altizer crossed the centre line of the highway and collided head-on with a semi-trailer unit. The S-U-V ended up beneath the cab of the rig in a ditch, where both vehicles burst into flames.  There is no fire department in nearby McLeese Lake. Police arriving on the scene emptied their fire extinguishers at the blaze, but had no effect.   A fire truck from a rural community eventually arrived at the scene to put the fire out.

His employer has confirmed that Altizer died, as did his wife Leah and their two children, Jonathan and Emily. Altizer worked as a systems manager at the Prince George Citizen newspaper. He and his family were heading to Vancouver when the accident occurred. The driver of the transport truck survived.

Highway 97 was completely closed to traffic for several hours as police investigated the collision. The highway was bare and dry at the time.

Oh, what a sad thing to happen. My condolences go out to the relatives.

What a horrible thing to have happen… I couldn’t imagine the reality of it happening to someone I know. Contrast that with the guy and his boy that were pulled from the Pacific in the dramatic rescue and it shows how fragile and sometimes involving luck, or lack of it, that life can be.

What a horrible tragedy! My condolences to the family.

I drove by that exact spot that morning a few hours before and it was frosty and mosit, I slowed way down in that area and I could feel my back end trying to swing out on me. It’s shady there so that frost would not have lifted off the road.

The roads looked safe but it was right around freezing which is hugely dangerous.
