Celebrating Black History Month Locally

Saturday, February 11, 2012 @ 3:50 AM

Prince George, BC – The Prince George African Heritage Society and the College of New Caledonia have teamed up to present a number of special events to mark Black History Month in the city…

It’s the 14th year for local celebrations and organizer, George Kaweesi, says, "These events remind everyone that our community is made up of those from near and far and they share a common goal of trying to make it better."

As part of the lineup of events, CNC Cinema will present the film, The First Grader, this evening in Room 1-306 at 7pm and 9:30pm.  Based on a true story, the movie is about Kimani N’gan’ga Maruge, an 84-year-old man who shows up on the doorstep of a rural school after the government of Kenya announces it will offer free primary education.  Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for students and seniors and are available at the college’s bookstore and Books & Co.

Next Saturday night, is ‘An Evening of Song’ at the First Baptist Church on Gillett Street, featuring the musical ensemble, Navaz, the Transfiguration Good News Band and a number of other performers.   The main event is a dinner and dance set for Saturday, February 25th in the Atrium and cafeteria at CNC.  Tickets for both events are also available at CNC’s bookstore and Books & Co.

"These events also serve as a reminder that people of African heritage have made some significant contributions to this community, that we appreciate it," says Kaweesi, "And that we should all learn to work together to build a better society."
