Good God, there was a Pro-D Day three weeks ago. How much “D” do teachers need?
Many years ago the BCTF approached the government to add 6 sessional days to the school year. Are you listening?!
These extra days would be dedicated to teacher professional development.
All professional services need to take time to reflect or learn new skills. We certainly hope our doctor is aware of new drugs and proceedures to help us medically. We hope our dentist keeps track of new techniques and technologies. We certainly hope our lawyer is aware of new legislation. And we certainly hope our teachers are aware of new curriculum changes. Sometimes new programs and courses.
I am getting a little tired of listening to anti-teacher rants on this blog.

It’s my understanding that the “Pro-D” day a while back was a school based day where school projects/plans were worked upon (usually driven by admin.). It was not a Pro-D day where teachers were out learning new things.
I guess it’s pretty hard not to feel frustrated with teachers right now. As part of their current job action children are suffering from lack of recess, report cards, extracurricular activities etc. It would be nice for these proffessional development days to be used to help end this crisis, rather than even more “training” days. I don’t believe the teachers are entitled to that right now.
I get that legally teachers are entitled to this process but this seemingly endless hostage taking of our province’s children sickens me. I would live to see teachers take this day to complete some report cards.
So do the schools compensate the City for the time it takes to organize some of these events to keep the young ones entertained?
Sounds like the City has a Kids-D day on those days. I suspect it is not done off the edge of one or more people’s desk.
Is this something we can cut from the budget while budget talks are still going on?
Sorry Culturevulture, if this hurts your eyes/ears. I’m not anti-teacher. What I am against is this many Pro-D days for “development”. What a load of you know what. Every other professional, including the ones you listed, do not collectively take the day off for improvement. Neither do they get the option for the summer off. Why don’t teachers do their collective improvement then?
Between summer holidays, stat holidays (with a new one coming for February), Spring Break, Christmas break, and Pro-D days… when do kids actually get taught something?
Does anyone else remember the short lived news release that these days are catered to the tune of hundreds of thousands per year… I wish I didnt have to pack a lunch either.

It seems that a lot of posters think that this headline refers to the teachers. ;-)
