Friday Free For All – February 17th, 2012
Friday, February 17, 2012 @ 12:00 AM
All the sweet heart niceties are now three days old as Valentines Day for 2012 has passed.
This week, Council opted to give back the funding to P.G. Air, and put IPG under the microscope….again….. but those may not be the most important issues in your mind.
It is time for the Friday Free for All , when you pick the topic. Just remember to obey the rules:
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
No Bullying of other posters.

Either I’m up too early, or I’m up too late. Happy Friday!!!
Gas went up again?? Is there some logical reason why fuel in Prince George is always one of the highest priced in North America? Our city fathers should be asking what’s up??
Domano Blvd….what a mess !!! Need I say more, and the spring pot hole season is yet to come!
If you were to ask yourself, :Is he his brothers keeper?
Than this week I’d say the award goes out to the old man out on a regular basis rain, snow, or shine on the side walk at 15th in front of the hospital with the sign that says, :Say no to abortion.
He gets my thumbs up this week standing in the first snow fall of the week on Thursday being his brothers keeper.
Hinton ALB. Gas $1.05 Deisel $1.12.
I know it is only Feb still but it is never too early to start reminding everyone that soon motorcycles will be out again. Maybe even sooner than most think this year . Please remember to take an extra second or 2 to look . And get off the cell phones to those of you who don’t get it yet.
We don’t need downtown heating, Northern winter games, initiatives Prince George or a Core review.
Lets get back to basics, three independent consultants have told the City you started cutting back on road maintenance with the Kinsley years and it continues today. They have been told they need to repair road beds before repaving. They have been told they need to spend a minimum of $ 12 million a year for the next ten years to get the roads into shape. They have been told, they have been told….
Before anything happens Sherri has to repay those that gave large amounts of money for her campaign!!!!
The fuel went up in Prince George because we always have to be higher than the average. No other reason. Barrel hasn’t moved for over two months besides down a fraction and levelling back out at $100.00
Jim13135 It’s not just Domano the roads are the @hits all over the place in the city most worse than others. I get a kick out of driving into Prince George from the Blackwater, nice smooth ride until you hit the Prince George City sign then hang on.
Just went past Frase Lake and fuel is 1.19 go figure at both reserve stations and Chevron which is always higher is 1.22 Vanderhoof is also cheaper than PG
I must say I am sorry to all my family and friends; as Harper and his Gestapo have now labelled me a pedophile!
I made the mistake of not agreeing that big government has the right to spy on ordinary Canadians through the internet.
Good People of Opinion 250
Due to anyone and everyone around the WORLD reading these opinions PLEASE state where these stories are happening when you write them so we all know the location of which you are talking about.
TIA
And where are you from lou? Most of the stories on 250 are in the Prince George area as 250 is based from here.
I understand that Opinion250 is named because of the 250 telephone exchange. So it really is anywhere but the GVRD region.
Maybe we should all change our nicknames to include a 2 letter community locator as well as shoe size.
According to gasbuddy.com the average price in Canada is as follows. (US in US$/US gal first, then Canadian in cents/Canadian litres
Today – 3.498 – 124.168
Yesterday – 3.495 – 123.742
One Week ago – 3.472 – 122.675
One Month ago – 3.342 – 121.012
One Year ago – 3.154 – 113.279
So it looks like we are in the average zone.
You’re right Gus area code 250 covers a huge area. Except for a few news items out of Kamloop, Kelowna and Vancouver Island, the majority of the news is local, well the northern part of it anyway.

Where have all the moose gone
Hunters in the Prince George and surrounding area are finding it more and more difficult to find a moose every year. I am fortunate to be able to take 5 to 7 weeks off ever hunting season. I have talked to a lot of hunters and they are leaving the bush year after year with no meat in the freezer. Lots of hunters are against cow calf season, they believe that by taking the cow or calf is depleting future moose, according to fish and wildlife 10 moose poached in one area is a lose of 60 to 70 moose in five years. They also say that only 2% of poaching incidents are reported.
So this being true why are they allowing cow/ calf season. I talked to a conservation officer a couple years ago, and when I asked him why they have it. His response was I quote (Its to generate money) I asked him if he would give me that in writing, he replied no I like my job. The poaching in BC is at an all time high, I have found 4 large bulls in 4 consecutive years that have been shot and left. All these moose were shot on the road. So if I can find 4 moose shot and left in one area, how many are left each year. There are not enough conservation officers in the Prince George area, their needs to be a lot more. Now letâs look at natural predators wolfs and bears do kill moose and they always have and yes they do take a lot down. Since all teran vehicles have come out, hunters have been shooting moose in areas that were so remote where before they would not even think of shooting one. So these remote pockets of moose are getting less.
The BC government would have you believe that wolfs are the main cause of the moose lose. This is a lot further from the truth than they would have you believe.
They will not blame themselves for total gross negligent are their part.
When the LEH hunting cards first came out they told us give us ten years and we would have an over abundant of moose in BC. That was over 30 years ago and still here we are. When I asked a Biologist what he had to say about a alack of moose In Prince George area. He informed me that the moose population has been stable for years. These guys need to get out in the field more and quit looking at numbers and graphs. The hunting questioner that is supposed to be filled out ever year for those that hunt is a joke. I know a lot of hunters that throw them in the garbage or just outright lie on them. Do you really think that poachers fill them out correctly? So for them to use this information to base how many animals are harvested every year is a bigger joke.
What is worse is they extended calf season. Your trading 140lb animal for one thatâs 340 lbs the following year. And those of you that say 140 lbs of meat is all you need is hogwash, ever hunter I run across that is hunting cow/calf there is always at least two of you. A lot of cows shot in October are already pregnant, so you are killing up to 3 moose. Now lets look at the BC biggest killer CN Rail, they kill thousands of moose, deer, elk, etc you name it. If it is on the tracks they kill it. This happens every year in our province. There is nothing done about it. Sections where animals are being hit the most need to be fenced off, runaway lanes need to be plowed when the snow is deep. We are building overpasses on our highways to protect our wildlife, why are we not doing something on our rail tracks, because the average Joe does not see the carnage on the tracks he sees on the highway. Take a trip on the passenger train in late spring to McBride or Terrace, ever 100 meters there is a blood splatter. I talked to a Train man that had made 23 trips to Chetwynd in a 4 week period he told me that he hit 21 moose, times that by how many trains are running around the clock. Heâs supposed to phone it in so they will come out and dispatch the animal thatâs laying there with its legs cut off. He told me he does phone it in but He sees the animal still laying there 24 hours latter. He also told me that his boss has told him to speed up when he sees an animal not slow down. This I imagine is so they donât have to pay someone to come out and kill it. Its Getting worse not better The government Would have you spend your hard earned dollars on tags, license, fuel, groceries, etc.
And have you believe the moose population is alive and well.
I know of a few guys that donât hunt anymore, they have taken matters into there own hands by putting in cow draws and if they get the draws they put them in their desk and donât use them. If 10 cows are saved that means an increase of 60 to 70 moose in 5 years are saved. So if you know any one that does not hunt, have them put in cow draws since BC Biologist is more interested in keeping the money flowing then in conservation.

How come campaign expenses and contributions for the majority of those who ran or were elected are not available on the citys website yet? Isn’t there some kind of timeline to have this information available to the public without having to go through the FOI act downtown?
I like your research Gus, just goes to show they are ripping us off in Canada. Here in Prince George we area paying $4.76 per US gallon.
“Now lets look at the BC biggest killer CN Rail, they kill thousands of moose, deer, elk, etc you name it. If it is on the tracks they kill it. This happens every year in our province. There is nothing done about it.”
I remember when I cam here (Prince George, BC, Canada, North America) in the esarly 1970s there were several times when moose kills on the tracks was a news itme in the Citizen with pictures and interviews, etc.
I have always wondered why that is no longer done. It might have something to do with the paper needing to limit its reporting due to cost.
R.I.P. Gary Carter………
R.I.P. Democracy in Canada…….
Why are we reading that the sales in lumber to the asian market is hitting all time highs, yet there has been 2 news stories this week alone reporting 2 of the bigger mills are losing money. And is it really losing money or just lost revenue because thier projections fell short?
the gasoline pump prices.
How does this fit in with one of the arguments for Northern Gateway pipeline being that at this time our oil sells at a discount in the US market and so we need another market.
Seems to me that we should be getting an equal discount.
Co’s are more interested in raiding peoples homes to rescue the poor spoiled goose and then threaten to destroy it for its own good. Moose be damned.
You think this is a rip off …. try Europe
Even Norway, a relatively oil-rich country, has gasoline prices that are roughly double the price in the USA.
They don’t have far to drive in Europe.
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-01-02/india/30581263_1_petrol-prices-litre-international-oil-rates
Prices in India are higher than Canada.
With today’s currency conversion the price of gasoline in India as it stood at the beginning of the year was at a rate of 65.65 rupees per litre = $1.33
Just in case anyone was travelling to India soon and renting a car. :-)
Must not be too provincial in our little community. World awareness is very important ….. you get to remember where the grass is green, light green and yellow … or has been covered by sand …. oil rich sand …. :-)
They don’t have far to drive in the GVRD …. LOL
On a more serious note, most people in the world are urban and most personal driving is actually done within each person’s immediate urban context.
The price of gasoline has an impact on urban sprawl. If the price in Canada were 2 to 3 x as high, we would begin to develop different types of housing and improved transit systems.
I inadvertently watched a Paula Deen cooking show for a few minutes this week. Methinks the woman should have a several week encounter with a fellow I will call Professor Henry Higgins. Couldn’t hurt,y’all.
Smart meter installed, first Hydro bill received. $80 increase. Wow.
What’s this Gus. Ontario is paying the same as BC for gas. Their oil wells must have dried up because the are usually about 5 cents less than BC.
Funny about the smart meters. Mine was installed last fall, 2 weeks before the end of my billing period. It seemed to be quite a large jump for those two weeks.
So I compared it with the previous years, and sure enough, it was quite a bit higher for the same time.
Does that mean that our old meters weren’t working right, or that our new ones aren’t?
On another note, why are the gas prices in Victoria, on an island, lower than the rest of the province??
$.70 a liter in Mexico.
” you get to remember where the grass is green, light green and yellow … or has been covered by sand …. oil rich sand ….”
Quote of the week – lmao
Have a great weekend everyone, stay safe if your travelling. Arguing over a nickel per litre is meaningless from a hospital bed.
Thunder: “Smart meter installed, first Hydro bill received. $80 increase. Wow.”
What kind of house do you live in? I pay under $100 a month equal payments and that’s with a smart meter.
Good point Johnny – I pay just under $200 a month but I have 2800 sq ft, an electric boiler radiant heat system (no gas at all) and six people showering and runnning computers…
Oh I forgot – a shop with electric heat too…
Our hydro bill is half what it was at this time last year. Could be that the hot tube blew the breaker and froze while we were away for a few weeks though. LOL
Here’s one for the road:
A Magisterial District Judge of Lancaster, Pennsylvania has been charged with a number of crimes associated with dismissing her own traffic violations. According to the U.S. Attorney General the 43-year-old judge faces charges on conflict of interest, tampering with public records and obstruction of justice.

Maybe a refinery in P.G. would help in keeping the price a bit lower by having the retailers close by for lower trucking costs?
(sarcasm fully intended).
So the letter writing campaign in support of the proposed 400 seat Coyote Bar has begun.
Looks like friends and “unsolicited” citizens (wink, wink)are starting to offer their opinions as to why a 400 seat Super Yahoo Bar would be so very good for our City. One supporter in his letter to the Citizen even touted it as a class A product that would improve the downtown…lmao over that premise. How will increased insurance premiums and claims to existing downtown businesses be an improvement to the downtown and our fair city? If the proposal was for a 400 seat Sushi Bar we wouldn’t be seeing all the letters to the Editor extolling its virtues as the drawbacks to the City would be nil. However a 400 seat Bar is going to cause collateral damage in some shape or form. It can be presented to the public six ways to Sunday and it will still be the same thing, a huge venue for liquor sales. I see nothing positive about the venue, all I see is increased policing costs and more drunks on the road as well as the inevitable social problems that such establishments bring. This venture is not intended to bring value to the downtown and the community, so don’t listen to the spin, it is simply a business venture to make money.
Class A product…still laughing over that one.
JohnnyBelt: I live in a 1700 square foot home, main level. 800 square feet upstairs, and a fully finished basement as well. Bills were in the $140.00 range every two months. I found this to be quite reasonable. We are pretty diligent in our household to make sure lights are shut off, etc. My first bill after the smart meter was installed is $220.00. Smart meter was only installed a few weeks ago, so I’m thinking the next billing will be even more.
Junco – and maybe some grown ups having a good time!
SAVE TO MOOSE,SAVE THE MOOSE…KILL ALL THE WOLVES…
PRINCE GEORGE BC CANADA….
Junco – and maybe some grown ups having a good time!
Or Stop Hunting them and let the wolves eat!
@PrinceGeorge, That could happen but unfortunately the refined fuel has to be loaded on to a tanker truck driven south across the boarder so a CEO can wave his/her magic wand over it and it comes back across the boarder worth twice as much as when it was before it crossed the boarder the first time.

Strange. I have more square footage, and I’m not super diligent about saving power, but I do what I can. My home is heated with natural gas and I’m still under $100 a month for Hydro.
If you’re not on equal payments, that might have something to do with it, as people tend to consume more power in the winter. I don’t like to see huge swings in my bills, so I opt for it.
I received a couple weeks notice about my new smart meter being installed. The day they showed up my wife was in the middle of some computer work that needed to be done before a shutdown. The installer went away and came back later.
These are the only things I know to be facts that are related to the new smart meters.
The installation was fine, received notice, they did what they said, I have no issues with that. I do have to look closer at my bill and see just what exactly the increase is all about. If they are basing this on an increase in usage or if this is just a rate increase. In any event, it seems like a drastic increase.
Johnny, my bills have been the same for months and months and always thought I was on equal payment. I will be looking into this further as well.
I do have a hot tub, so I definitely expect that to cost me more, but I have had this for years and it is not new.
This may be why some will see an increase on your bills as well as why the government wants to force everyone to have one installed.
âWe put five of these meters alongside five
new electromechanical meters. After one
month, the CENTRON R300 meters proved
their ability to measure energy usage not
measured by the electromechanical meters.
This accuracy showed two kilowatt hours
more than the electromechanical meters. That
does not sound like much of a difference, but
when it is multiplied by 10,000 end points,
it adds up,â said Hastings.
This was taken from the Itron website
Just to put things in context, according to my last bill, a kilowatt hour cost between 6 and 9 cents.
Falcon announced PST will return on April 1, 2013…. yes.. on April Fools Day.
smartMeter installed , same amount of KWH as last Years, only cost per KWH gone up.What is the alternative ,we all Heat with Wood and use Coal Lamps, my Back is getting to old for this, so I pay Hydro, yes I would to have it for nothing, but only dream about it.
Or Stop Hunting them and let the wolves eat!
Officially started liquidating my assets in anticipation the potential NDP election win. Not taking any chances this time.
weaksause, I’m surprised you have any assetts left with the Liberals in power for the past 12 years.
I read where the bag of hot air Sean Penn likes to cozy up to the murderous dictator Hugo Chavez and complain about rich people, and journalists who criticize Chavez should go to jail. http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2010/03/08/sean-penn-wants-reporters-jailed-calling-chavez-dictator/

VulgarSage:”…it comes back across the boarder worth twice as much as when it was before it crossed the boarder the first time.”
How can we get a slice of that pie, that racket?
Unless one heats with electricity, house square footage is almost irrelvant since it relates more directly to light and its use, what appliances one has, which are electric, how old they are and how often and how they are used. Part of that is much more dependant on the number of people in the house.
We pay around $65 to $70 in the summer per bill and around $85 in the winter. So, average of $75 for two months or $35 to $40 per month. There has been no cahnge since the new meter was installed about 4 months ago.
We do not go over the low rate. The last bill was getting close to tipping the scale, but has not.
We used to pay over $100 up to $130 or so several years ago. We have slowly changed to energy efficient bulbs, we have several fluorescent fixtures and a few low voltage halogen lights which are now the high drainage. We have a good qulity new fridge as well as electric stove and microwave. We use a toaster oven more often than the stove oven.
We prefer task lights over room lights and turn room lights off as we leave the rooms.
We no longer leave some of the exterior lights on.
I have always liked lower, cozier light levels.

I thought I would make a copy of that to share with my friends in Uzbekistan.
Post quick! Once the Free For All moves to the second page it’s dead.
We have had two bills since our smart meter was instaled and our bill is within a couple of bucks for the same period last year. But rates are gpoin up to cover the provincial budget.
Cheers
ok

Don’t blame you. It’s gotta be tough knowing the government handouts to business at the taxpayers expense is shortly coming to an end hey?
Shortly followed by the business’ layoff notices to the taxpayer… Round and round we go except no one can argue that 14% unemployment and being a “have not” province is better than what we have now ;-)
weaksauce wrote: “Post quick! Once the Free For All moves to the second page it’s dead.”
You are absolutely right. One of the things which could be improved on the site.
Because of free for aall friday being special, maybe a way could be found to keep it at the top for the 24 hour period.
I would have to agree with Gus’s and Weaksauce’s posts about the Friday Free For All.
How about Free For All everyday?
The Cherry Point refinery in Washington went up in flames Friday afternoon. A couple of days after the gas prices went from $1.19 to $1.24 a litre here in PG. Whoever does the phone calls to every gas station in and around PG must have a crystal ball, and if they don’t they have their justification handed to them. Cool, eh? Maybe they will go up again?
Makes my $300 electric bill last month look like I use a ton. On a shared well and the people who share refuse to pay more than $14.50 per month…and the wellhouse has electric baseboard heat…summer time around $120
Anyhow wanted to say on the Coyote bar idea, we as a city need to retain population. If we do not have anything for the population to do in this town after work it is not going to take long for a new wife to say “we are pulling up stakes and moving to somewhere you can do something in the evenings.”
Happy wife = happy life
Doneright. Starting a new paragraph now and then would be helpful.
I think that since you can no longer shoot wildlife from the side of a major highway, that the animals have found that, that is a safe area.
Coming back from McBride a few months ago I saw at least 5 moose, 3/4 bears, 1 deer,
There are actually herds of deer in and around the pulp mills.
The Prince George City limits which takes in a hell of a lot of wilderness is for all intents and purposes a wild animal sanctuary.
I see more deer, moose, bears, and other wildlife within the City limits than ever before.
Effective April 1st 2013 the HST is DEAD.
Long live the PST.
…moving to somewhere you can do something in the evenings”. New wife? Ha ha ha . Gotta be married a long time before that topic comes up. No pun intended. Happy wife? Ha ha ha .
It’s a sad day in the neighbourhood when you think the addition of another bar is what will keep your wife happy!
I agree, keep the nightlife out of Prince George. If we don’t, people might have to stop complaining about the lack of nightlife.
It’s a sad day when
1. others can dictate how one lives their lives
2. one thinks that nightclubs are all dives.
3. one has never experienced quality nightclubs.
At one time, and all pretty well at the same time, there were two reasoanble ones at the Yellowhead Inn, one plus a lounge at the Simon Fraser, two at the Inn of the North, The Vienna Schnitzel restaurant/dance + Vhiskey Mill Disco, and the various versions at the location of what today is the Rum Jungle. Then we also had a few smaller players that popped up over time, including the jazz “club” below the CI Native Health Centre. I remember seeing Long John Baldry there.
All those named are without naming the “dives” of which there also were at least 3 to 5.
We must separate those who speak against these places because they are true WASPs, temperance people, and recovered alcoholics from those who are interested in having some better entertainment choices in a place that wants to be the “Capital of the North”.
