Prince George, B.C. – This is Heritage week across BC. Heritage week is celebrated in communities throughout the province each year, commencing on national Heritage Day, the third Monday in February. Communities take the opportunity to recognize heritage buildings, places and history and organize special events.
Over the past 2 years the Prince George Heritage Commission in conjunction with the City of Prince George has produced 22 Downtown Heritage Signs. They have reproduced 17 of the sign images into placemats that will be distributed to local restaurants to use as during Heritage Week. There will be 17 different placemats and they are hoping that the restaurants will use a difference placemat at each table setting. I.e. if a table of 6 sat down they would have 6 different placemats to look at.
On Feb 25th the Heritage Commission will present a Heritage Citation Award to Sacred Heart School, recognizing the facility as the city’s oldest elementary school. It was built in the late 1940s and opened on October 30th, 1949. A gala fundraiser is being held Saturday night at the Ramada.

I walked the length of George Street last week. I found nothing on it in reference to the word “historic”. Vacant lots, empty stores, First Nations outreach centres, an old paperback bookstore, bakery, etc. I have a Spongebob Squarepants place mat. Works for me.
Place mats and signs may be good but just how many heritage sites have been saved? Give us a list please and then a list of all the sites that were destroyed.
