Premier Takes Wait and See Approach to Enbridge
Tuesday, February 28, 2012 @ 11:55 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Premier Christy Clark says B.C. has the clout to stop the proposed Enbridge twin pipeline, but the risks and benefits of the project must be weighed first.
“We don’t know what the risks are yet” said Clark on the Meisner program on CFISFM this morning. “We’ve got this environmental review underway and its looking at all of the risks and benefits of this project. Until we quantify what those are, its easy to imagine that the risks might be greater than they actually might be. Who knows, I don’t know what the answer at the end of it is going to be. If the risks are too great, if it poses a terrible environmental threat in British Columbia we will not let it go ahead, that’s the bottom line.”
But Clark says the process shouldn’t be pre-judged “ We should wait and see whether or not the environmental threat is manageable, if its minimal, or if its huge. And if it’s manageable and minimal well, then we need to start to think about what are the benefits for British Columbia and how do we make sure we maximize those. So to me, I look at my critics who say ‘Christy, you should just come out and trash the thing’ well, why do we have a process if they’re going to sit around and say we know what the result of that process is going to be?”
She says the benefit for B.C. and for the Nation as a whole “Could be very, very large. But again, it’s a balance of risk and benefits that we have to meet.”
She says while oil tankers move up and down the Georgia Strait “all the time” the question is whether or not the Enbridge project can be done safely.
The list of those who oppose the proposed twin pipeline project continues to grow. The City of Prince Rupert has now gone public with its opposition to the project. Council for that City voted unanimously to oppose the project. The Joint Review Panel hearings are underway in Old Masset today and tomorrow. The hearings are being webcast and you can access them by clicking here.

Harper’s robo-calls and Harper’s robo-Christy.
How can anyone know whether the risk is going to be manageable or not without an actual oil spill to “manage”. If there are tankers on the ocean along that part of the coast then the danger of an oil spill is real. So there is your risk factor right there, christy. No tankers, no oil spill, no oil spill, no risk to manage. Its that simple. As I have said all along. I am not a NIMBY, if I thought this pipeline and tanker traffic was good for BC and PG in particular economically I would have to seriously weigh my environmental concerns before just saying no. But the fact is, that there is minimal benefit to BC, even less to PG and more than likely is going to even cost us consumers more in the end, spill or no spill, so for me it’s a no brainer. No to enbridge, no to pipeline and no to tankers off our north coast.
Video looked like mud to me. Seems to be quite liquid compared to oil in cold temperatures. Just saying. Been in mud looking like that.

Follow up video seamutt. It was oil!
How much oil!
The people complained for 3 days before Enbridge did anything about the leak.
Enough to dig up the creek banks. They wouldn’t of done it if it wasn’t for the guy complaining.

I think if Christy Clark can not make up her mind and think for herself on the most important issue of her time as premier, than she most definitely should not be premier.
I don’t think Christy represents BC on this the issue that defines her premiership, and that says a lot about Christy Clark IMO… its all politics and glamor for that politician. Wissy washy willing to throw away BC’s coast and energy competitiveness at home for nebulous politics satisfying the backroom deal makers at the expense of the province, but not wanting to come out and be clean about it.
Our Priemier comes from a far southern part of our big beautiful province and she isn’t too worried about some northern rivers that will be poluted, and they will and when they become poluted they will be deemed useless and worthless so what harm will be done by letting ENBRIDGE carry on doing it’s dirty oil transport?
It is funny how she says, what is the point of having a review if you aren’t willing to listen to all the facts. Well, someone should tell that to our esteemed dictator harper. He seems to think anyone opposed is an ecoterrorist or is trying to sabotage the Canadian economy through foreign influence. He has called the process “the approval process” which clearly shows his mind is made up before all the “facts” are in. Because facts do not matter to him. He has virtually promised china a pipeline will go to the coast and tankers will take oil to china. If that isn’t disregarding the “process” I don’t know what is.
Hopefully the pipeline will be built sooner than later, despite all the above tree hugger bs. Obviously the risks of spills is minimal or they wouldn’t even propose the project. Witness a big pipe oil line going through Jasper for the last 50 years, with the same geography. Another example of good engineering, construction and maintenance = no leaks. This pipe will go in with the highest of expertise. Plus, you should all take a course in economics to see the massive long term economic benefits that will accrue to the northern part of our province.
You don’t get it do you. The pipeline is only a means to get the oil to the tankers. BCers (not just treehuggers) including virtually all first nations, especially those along the coast have said a resounding NO, so far 3 major coastal communities have said NO to tanker traffic off the northern coast. This isn’t just about economics, which is very minimal for nothern BC. Enlighten me mr. economic guru on all the economic benefits that will accrue for years to come…not including oil spill cleanup jobs of course.
For you who support the sale of oil to China. Have you given the environment any thought? Or have you looked at the news blogs or what ever you call the entries made on this subject above? My take on it is I would never allow crude oil to be shipped any where unless it is refined first.
“you should all take a course in economics to see the massive long term economic benefits that will accrue to the northern part of our province”
Where is this course taught? At the Fort McMurray school of economics?
