Teachers Get Approval for Limited Strike
Prince George, B.C.- The Labour Relations Board has approved limited strike action for the BC Teachers Federation.
The Board has ruled teachers must give 2 days notice of any full job action, and that they will be allowed to withdraw all services for three days the first week, and one day each following week.
The Board also ruled teachers cannot block access to the schools.
The full out strike action is aimed at forcing a settlement with the B.C. Government. The teachers have been without a contract since last June.
This afternoon, the Provincial Government will introduce legislation which is expected to extend the last contract for another two years, and appoint a mediator to look for cost savings that could result in meeting the government’s "Net Zero" contract mandate.
Earlier today, on the Meisner program on CFISFM, Premier Christy Clark said she hoped the legislation would offer an "out" for the teachers, one that would "bring them back from the cliff edge" they have reached.

LOL! Only a few more holes to drill in the hull of the “Good Ship Liberal” Christy, then she’ll be done. Let me know if you’d like me to sharpen the drill bits for you!
I’m gett’in a little fed up with this. 15% in this day and age is a little too much to ask for, and there’s two parties playing games. I think a cooling off period is a good thing. Anywhere else 15% would be laughed at.
Slim, could you enlighten me about what the last MLA wage increase was? Could it have been more than 15%? Just asking.
Clarke says yes you should negotiate in one breath but no, we will not negotiate in the next breath. What is it?
I am sure that we all realize that the public purse can not pay huge increases but I am sure we could negotiate a COLA clause.
Lets see, 8 week course on heavy equipment operation and then about $80,000 a year with overtime. Or, 5 years of university and then after 10 more years you finally get up to full salary. 5 year degree with no masters you should get $70 after the 15 years of training. Gee, which would you take.
I’m not a fan of our current government, and definitely not happy with our governmental systems, but if the liberals of B.C. cave to the teachers, then the precedent will be set for another special interest group to step up expecting their demands to be met. Everybody always wants more. Who would not like to be paid more?
Be honest. People on welfare are not “paid” enough, we always hear. Minimum wage earners are not paid enough. Okay, lets pay people $17.00/hr. to flip burgers, great. Now the people who buy those $15.00 burgers are going to have to earn a better wage in order to be able to afford to eat out.
The people above them now have to earn more money. Heck, pensioners should be getting more than they are, and regular increases too, while you’re at it.
One of the big reasons always given is that “the price of everything keeps going up” Uh, yep, the cost of labour keeps going up, so the price of all goods and services must rise to ensure that the business remains viable. It is currently a never ending cycle, the only way to break it is to undergo a complete change of morals and become a provincial or federal politician. They make the rules.
They design their own system of rewards that ensure their pension pays them a lot more than many people will ever be paid for honest labour, after what, two terms? Six or eight years of service and you make as much or more on your pension than an HONEST working person. Is that fair? The working person, union member, works for 40 years to get their union pension of maybe $2,500.00 per month, before taxes.
Hardly comparable to the mla or mp pension system is it?
metalman.
