Facebook Event Urges Student Walk Out

Thursday, March 1, 2012 @ 12:03 PM
Prince George, B.C.- In addition to having to deal with a job action by teachers, School District 57 is also sending out a safety alert about a facebook event that calls on   high school students in Prince George to walk out of their classes on Friday afternoon.

In his message, posted on the School District 57 home page, Superintendent Brian Pepper advises this planned “student demonstration” is not a sanctioned School District event:

“I am asking that you discuss individual safety plans with your child if they have decided to participate in the activity tomorrow (March 2, 2011).  You should be aware that this is not a district or school sponsored event.  It is not sanctioned and not approved by School District Staff. As such there is no off-site supervision by school or district staff. The RCMP are aware of this Facebook Page.”

Being promoted on Facebook, the event has invited 386 people,. But so far, only 44 have indicated they will attend.

The event calls on students to gather outside the P.G. Public library for a demonstration, however, other posters to the page   urge students to gather at PGSS, where the protest will have more visibility from motorists  as they drive by on highway 97.

Yes, safety should be paramount. My daughter’s high-school has said the students have a right to protest, but they can’t leav the school grounds.

I think the students do have a right to express themselves and their political opinions. I remember back in my day as a high-school student, I protested in a walk out on behalf of teachers, because I believed I should get a good education and my teachers deserved more. My teenage daughter feels the same, as she told me today when I asked her why she wanted to walk out of school on Friday.

I think most of the students will participate, whether they know why they are doing it or not. Hopefully other schools protect students with a ‘protest, but do not leave school grounds’ policy.

Thanks to Mr. Pepper for reminding us that the RCMP are aware of the student facebook page. I would imagine that the RCMP are also aware of the S.D. 57 website. Good info to know. GAL

Actually camoose I think its quite prudent to let the RCMP be aware that they may have hundreds or possibly thousands of teenagers gathering or walking the streets…

I am one of the PGSS students organizing this event. The event will be held outside PGSS, near the highway but remaining on school property. Measures are being taken to ensure the safety of our fellow students and make this an engaging event.

There are 2 events refering to this undertaking. the first refers to gathering at the Public Library, the other at PGSS.

BOTH events are now going to take place AT PGSS, to eliminate travel issues and parental concerns.

We hope to deliver a strong message towards the state of the education system.

Interesting… Brian Pepper says “You should be aware that this is not a district or school sponsored event. It is not sanctioned and not approved by School District Staff.” Yet….Quite obviously the Teachers job actions & planned walk out is not “sanctioned” by the Government,
but they’re going ahead anyway (which is their legal right…for now;) ) Do as we say not as we do & plan to do Mr. Pepper?

Haha 44 people involved. In the last 3 hours this has bloomed to over 15,744 students planning to attend plus over 70,000 other students that have been invited and have not replayed to it yet. At our school some students were told by admins that if they participated in the walk out there would be a phone call home and possible suspensions. The apparent idea of this is to support the teaches in the job action and to show that students believe in what the teachers want. I believe people are just going to try and use this as a simple way to get out of class. Even though this is just my opinion and may not be shared by others. The above link is to the facebook page.

Who cares if they walk out. This whole fiasco is costing taxpayers bundles of money.

We have to pay for the Schools, the Teachers, Water, Heat, Security, Cleaning, etc;. Then we have to feed and water the students, then we have to pay for the School Boards, and the Trustee’s and last but not least we pay for the bloody politicians.

Taxpayers get it in the ear no matter what happens. Its time for all these people to grow up.

… student demonstration not sanctioned by the school…? Kinda shoots holes in the premise “children learn by example”. What a sad state of affairs for every one. Government, teachers, students and their parents. Three day strike should clear some air what with fifty or sixty SUVs with moms waiting outside the schools for their overweight under exercised darlings.

do the students even know the issues ? Mine were shocked to see the full list of demands they have, seems they left those out when explaining their positions to my kids during class time.

I received a text from my daughter this morning

“We’re talking about the strike right now our teacher makes alot of Sense.I’m pro teacher!”

my response
“You also need to look at it from other views.I do hope the teacher is not using class time to spew propaganda.”

I offered her a math lesson when she got home. She didn’t take me up on it. If she wants to walkout tomorrow I’m OK with it. She will be reading the teachers demands tonight . I am planning on giving her a basic math lesson on the cost of a teacher taking 6 months off. We’ll start with the cost of one teacher and then multiply by 10 for rough figures. When she see’s how many dollars may be taken out of the classroom in a large school, she may change her views somewhat.

Just for the record I am Pro education. If it means higher taxes, so be it.

Boomer I hope you also show your daughter the insane demands the BCPSEA want to impose. I feel for the teachers as I am in another government union that may be bent over just like them.

You can count on it verballabel

Kids-stay in school-let the adults deal with this.If you walk out or stay out during class time you should get suspended for being awal. When you are an adult and paying your own way-then you can make your own decisions.

It’s a fundamental freedom that these kids have to assemble tomorrow to show their support. They are doing something about a situation. Look at the majority here that complain about issues (city hall) to name one, but do nothing but type words.

Go Figure. my daughter was told that they (the government) are trying to get 60 students in each class. And some guy Abbott has lots to do with the strike.

Don’t know what to say. I think for once I’ll just keep my mouth shut.

Informed my daughter that equipment that helps pay taxes came in the box I cut up for signs for her to wear.

Her Response “Your taxes have gone to pay for a suspension bridge and a rip in a stadium roof.”

I know she doesn’t read the paper or listen to news on the radio. Where did this info come from?

lou, you sound like someones Grampa, come in out of the cold war.I believe the acronym you were looking for is “awol”.
I also am for teenagers expressing themselves in a constructive manner, but as I tell my daughter, she has the right to express her informed opinion, not to spew off some hackneyed rhetoric spun by
either the BCTF or the Government.
Boomer, explain to your daughter that
your taxes also support the priveleged
lifestyle we all enjoy, universal health
care, roads, libraries etc. It isn’t perfect but it’s alot better than what the majority of the world’s population has.

“Three day strike should clear some air what with fifty or sixty SUVs with moms waiting outside the schools for their overweight under exercised darlings.” Wow, harbinger, could you have been more offensive? I have a 120 lb 11-year-old, he’s built like a brick sh!t house. Plays more sports than most kids his age. Overweight, perhaps, under exercised, not in the least. As for a bunch of suv mommies waiting for thier little precious darlings, yeah I’m not about to let my boy walk home when the world is not a safe place anymore for a kid to walk home. The world is beyond, “don’t talk to strangers” and “don’t take candy from a man in vans”.

hEY!!I drive a white van with no side or back windows. I feel sorry for any child that is brought up to believe there are boogey men around every corner.

The paranoids are out to get me.

…the world is not a safe place anymore…. Don’t repeat that in front of yer kid too often or he will believe it and live in your basement maybe until he is 34.

harbingers post are all the same, non informative and derogatory, boring internet troll …
