PGDTA Say Other Unions Advised Lines are Information Only

Thursday, March 1, 2012 @ 2:12 PM
Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George and District Teachers Association says it will in fact have members at each of the schools in School District 57 on Monday   when the teachers start their job action but the lines are not “picket lines”.

“We will have people at all the sites” says PGDTA President Matt Pearce, “But we won’t be on picket lines. We have spoken to all of the other unions involved with the School District and advised them these are information lines only.”

Pearce is responding to an open letter to parents from SD57 Superintendent Brian Pepper, in which he expresses concern that  other unionized workers with SD57 may feel compelled not to cross   the line and will head home rather than report to work. (see previous story)
Pearce says there is no expectation on the part of the teachers union that other unionized workers would not report to work because of the job action slated to start Monday morning.

Pearce says teachers will not be wearing the “sandwich board” type signs that   usually go with strike action, “We will be wearing signs to let people know who we are, but we will not be blocking access to the schools.”

Prince George teachers will have their information lines in place at 7 a.m. Monday and will be on site until 4 in the afternoon.

the govt always just sits back and lets the public sector unions shoot themselves in the foot, their their own worst enemies.

How true

Speaking of schools (Ahem) you should have written “they’re their own…” They (apostrophe)’re, as in “they are”. Apostrophes are nice. Except at Tim Horton’s where their apostrophes seem to have fallen off their signs.

LMAO. Bin notising lots of peeple bad mouthin edjamacaters latly.

Raise a Reader anyone? Maybe yer own grandpa?

Yawn !!! troll alert

troll = one who paid attention in English class? Right?

easy solution:
class size too big
young teachers cant get jobs
no more money for education

cut pay across the board
hire the teachers who will take
these new “low pay” jobs
reduce class size at no extra cost

net benefit
lower unemployment
better education
more productive society

what works in Scandinavia will work here too

The average teacher in Stockholm makes WAY less than the lowest paid teacher in BC. Enough said!

cupricity, thank you for posting this information. Canadians need to remind themselves daily how very lucky they are. We live in a great country and have so many advantages compared to other societies. I wish more people would remind themselves of this. I know a number of teachers who think they are well paid.

This isn’t Stalkholm cupricity!! How about you try comparing apples to apples. Maybe you didn’t get that lesson when you went through school. Perhaps your class also had too many special needs students and your teacher was unable to make sure that you had learned all the curriculum. You should be outraged and demand to go through the system a second time. Maybe you will have one of those young teachers with no experience in dealing with unique learners, such as yourself. I hope you will gain a ‘better education’ as a result.

An injustice has be brought to the attention of the public. What should we do now, oh, wise one?

Enough said!

Checked on web. SD 91 Lakes Nechako lowest paid teacher (June 2010) gets $43,160. Highest paid is $85,386. Not real poorly paid for working approximately 170 days per year. They get paid based on 9.1 hours per day plus the benifit package is one of the best in Canada for government employees.

Your right it’s not Stockholm. Housing prices are about 30 percent in PG of what they are there. There is a 25 percent HST. Income tax for a teacher would be in the 50 percent range, Gas is 2.40cdn a liter.

The only thing that Sweden has better than Canada is a lower corporate tax rate.

If you want great public services we need to pay more taxes and pay the public service less.

Enough said.

Let taxpayers use their own school tax dollars as they wish, in order to fund a proper education, free of constant bickering between politicians and a dogmatic self serving, left wing union.

OLD 55 85,000 for 9 months of work is pretty good. Thats like 113,000 for 12 months.

Even 43,000 for 9 months is 57333 and those numbers do not include benefits which would add another 15,000 at least for pension liabilities, etc.

cupricity, try finding a job that will hire you for the two weeks at Christmas, one week at Spring Break, and for two months during the summer that has the same salary. It is impossible and you know it. You cannot just inflate the number. Teachers do not get paid during the breaks. They need to find other work. You are being unreasonable! It is like saying your salary or pay is triple what it actually is because there are 24 hours in a day instead of 8 so if the hours are triple then your pay must be too. Maybe the government should adopt your theory and start taxing you triple.

As for Sweden, again, I cannot make a comparison. From your limited numbers, there seems to be an advantage and any statistics can be created to support your side. This doesn’t help. Stop looking outside of Canada for a reason to not support a teacher.

fair comment, I don’t understand your comment. Can you explain?
