Trucker Faces Possible Impaired Charges After Crash

Thursday, March 1, 2012 @ 2:40 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The driver of a tractor trailer unit is suspected of impaired   driving in a crash that happened around 8:30 this morning.

The crash occurred at the intersection of highways 97 and 16 where a Pontiac Sunfire had stopped at the lights and was rear ended by a northbound tractor trailer.

After providing his personal details, the driver of the tractor trailer drove away. The driver of the Sunfire noticed what was thought to be an odour of liquor on the truck driver’s breath.

The tractor trailer was located a few minutes later on Queensway by members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement branch (CVSE).

The driver and lone occupant of the Sunfire, was transported to the University Hospital of Northern BC with non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver was uninjured.

The driver of the tractor trailer was thought to be impaired by alcohol and was detained. The 38 year old resident of Terrace, BC was transported back to the Prince George Detachment where he provided two breath samples, each more than twice the legal limit.

Criminal Code charges of Impaired Driving and Impaired Over .08, are being recommended against the driver, who was released on a Promise to Appear for court on a later date.

So do they impound the truck and trailer in this case?

He was northbound at 97 and 16 and then was found on Queensway? He must have been drunk…

Sounds like the driver’s been following the Monty Robinson saga.

You know, there’s a lot of darn good professional truckers out there.Far as I’m concerned this one is just a guy with a drivers licence.

“He was northbound at 97 and 16 and then was found on Queensway? He must have been drunk…”

Why must he have been drunk to get from where he was to Queensway?

It is Hwy 97 North and South

It is Hwy16 East and West

It just so happens that at the intesection of Hwy 16 and 97 the relatively true directions to are reversed. At that intersection

Hwy 16 is located in a North/South alignment
Hwy 97 is located in a nominal East/West alignment (more like W-NW/E-SE)

So, if the tractor trailer was seen heading off to the North with respect to the compass rather than with respect to the name of the highway, and he was soon afterwards located on Queensway, he would have continued on Hwy 16, through the Gateway, down Victoria and along First if he followed the designated Hwy16 route through town. It does not say where along Queensway he was found. I suppose he could have gone along 20th to Queensway as well.

So we have this problem … there is no “bypass” of Hwy 16. It takes one smack through the middle of town. If one is new, no matter what one drives, a map is not exactly the best guide to get one through town when one travels east to west or west to east.

Boundary Road will bypass the city for those heading South from the East or East from the South

Who was the assinine idiot wanting to blame truckers for this arses mistake? He was supposed to be a professional driver so should lose his license for at least 5 years, oops! I forgot, there was an accident! He should lose his license for life and possibly a jail sentence. He could have killed lots of people like that captain of the Costa Concordia. He was in charge of a large vehicle. Anybody can get a truckers license. Many are great men with good driving records and history of saving people’s lives. Long live the trucker! Not this fool. There is always one bad apple somewhere in the barrel.

Dragon… Its not that complicated. If he was north bound on 97 and WANTED to be on Queensway he would have turned off after the bridge…

Actually inter you’ve made it appear very complicated.

So why does that means he had to be drunk?

Insert head banging wall emoticon here.

Frikken surrounded by wanna be rocket scientists armed with spatulas!

Thanks Slim2229, I’m a trucker again, after many years, but I don’t release the “air brake big yellow button” unless I am sober.
Love driving truck and I will never screw that up!

But I will not judge this fellow, because I wasn’t there.

Something really funny going on here with this one. I passed the scene just as the RCMP were arriving. The Sunfire was sitting 3/4 of the way down the long merge lane adjacent to the playhouse. I gave it a good look as I was sitting waiting in the left turn lane from 16W onto 97N.

There was another car behind the Sunfire so I figured it was just a little fender bender. I took a real good look at the rear of the Sunfire and didn’t see any damage other than the dirt being rubbed off. I did see some snow clumps consistent with a collision in the intersection though.

I am happy to see this guy get nabbed but I am not very happy with the waste of resources that occurred after the fact.

I saw 2 fire trucks and 1 ambulance attend this and all for a scuffed bumper.

I would think the truck driver proceeded to Ferry to get onto Queensway in an attempt to get back onto 97N.

I was at the intersection when this happened. I too was surprised at the little damage the car had, he hit it hard enough to send the car over 2 lanes of traffic.
