Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings opened a three-game weekend road trip with a victory that guarantees them a berth in the BCHL playoffs, their first since 2009.
The Spruce Kings rolled into Cominco Arena in Trail Friday night and smelted the Smoke Eaters 6-1. No scoring in the first period. Then the Kings went to work scoring five times, including three on the power play, to grab a commanding 5-0 lead after 40 minutes. The Spruce Kings got one more in the third before Brent Baltus broke Ty Swabb’s bid for the shutout with 1:52 left in the game. Swabb made 28 saves on the night as the Kings outshot Trail 43-29. Jujhar Khaira and Chase Golightly each had three-point games with a goal and two assists. Michael Colantone had a goal and a helper. League scoring leader Paul De Jersey picked up an assist.
The Spruce Kings went into the weekend needing just one victory or a Vernon loss to secure the berth in post-season play. With that wrapped up, they play in Trail again Saturday night before heading to Vernon for a Sunday afternoon encounter.
