Two Rallies Planned to Support Teachers

Monday, March 5, 2012 @ 12:06 PM

Prince George, B.C.- As Teachers  set up  information pickets  outside schools today, there is word of  two rallies planned to show support for the teachers actions.

The first is set for tomorrow  from noon to 1.  It is to be held  on  5th avenue  in front of the constituency office of  MLA/Cabinet Minister Shirley Bond.  That action is  in conjunction with a protest being organized by the Canadian Union of Public Employees which will take place  at noon  in Victoria on the grounds of the Legislature.

Then, on Wednesday evening, the Prince George and District Teachers Association is holding a rally  outside the Prince George Civic Centre.    That rally is set to get underway at 6 p.m.

Teachers are on legal job action right now.  While they are off the job ( today tomorrow and Wednesday)  schools in SD57 are open, however there is no bus service and  no classroom instruction.  Parents have been advised to keep their kids at home, or make  arrangements  for  day care if at all possible.

Hi.

I really think that the teachers
have a right to strike…hey
why not…I used to be a union
member….

But…why do they have to put up
their tent across the street from
me at shaughnessy and central ave..

and wave at cars all day long who honk

there fucking horns like crazy and are
driving a retired guy to the point where he is going to go across the street and kick some school teacher butt………

move to another location tomorrow………please before I have a nervous breakdown………….

Why not go over and join them for awhile………show your support. Or put on some headphones and listen to music. It’s only for a couple of days.

Opinion 250 will remove your post very soon.. You cant drop the f bomb on here no matter how frustrated.. If you want to be heard then revise it….. just sayin’

Teachers seem to put themselves above the average population. All the other unions realized the economy is bad, and went for the net zero but the teachers had to show everybody they are unique.

Cursing denotes a lack of command of the English language. Doncha know?

my,my, you people are so easily distracted from the main issues….a wonder our government finds their job so easy to screw you up!!

muckermike, Where exactly is the economy bad for BC?

Forestry, oil and gas, coal in the northeast, mining, mining exploration, all running flat out in BC. High world commodity prices have been a boom for BC.

And we are still paying the HST.

Last I checked I don’t think Victoria is writing cheques to Greece.

So if our Provincial government is having a bad economy it surely isn’t because BC is having a bad economy. Perhaps its a Victoria mismanagement of money combined with a tax structure that is unsustainable to run government.

Taxed out. There is a difference between busy and prosperous. Lumber and gas are still in the tank and a lot of the mines are in the infastructure stages where the money is going out and not coming in. Most of these industries were hammered over the past 3-4 years and are now trying get back in the black. A lot of people felt the pain when the teachers were getting their nice raises, so now it may be time to reverse the trend. Let the tax payers catch their breath before you sqeeze us for some more!

Squeeze oops

Sorry cougs78, the tax revenue that Victoria is after comes from the workers of all these industries. The theory is that a reduction in corporate tax brought on by the BC Liberals is supposed to be more than made up from the workers that are hired as a result of this generous corporate tax structure. Therefore whether these companies are struggling with debt or not does not make much difference to the government coffers as Victoria is relying on its tax revenue from the workers.

When did the teachers get a nice raise cougs78?…..Their last contract was imposed on them in 2005 and the previous one was imposed after it was tore up. Perhaps they got a nice raise a generation ago, but sorry nothing other than what has been imposed for a very long time.

It’s your MLA’s that got the nice raise in 2005 right after they imposed the last contract on the teachers. You may be confused as to which government employees you are refering to, cougs78.

Is the difference between busy and prosperous the new excuse as to why this Liberal government cannot manage money, cougs78?

Taxed out – the teachers got 16% and a $3700 signing bonus last contract. Hardly “a generation” ago

If muckermike (and others) repeat the “big lie” provided by their handlers often enough the rest of us are expected to accept it as the truth. At least that’s how it was supposed to work. Thing’s are never supposed to get better.

Imposed interceptor….and was less than the cost of living when you consider the time frame from 2001. In my own job since 2001 my wage has increased 54% in the private sector, non-union.

man, no one really knows the truth on either side of this mess. you believe which ever side you are pumping for and it’s true while the other side are complete liars. my kids will go to private school and I can sleep easy knowing that there wil be no battling between employer and union for their education. Private school is the way to go, and it isn’t that expensive in PG.

The last raise for teachers was 16% over 5 years and over that time teachers were negative in relation to CPI.

Here is some net zero for you:

The content of the article may shed some insight into why unions are good for the common working person.

Note, I do not argue for the rights of the B.C. teachers, I deplore big union, big business, and most certainly do not support most actions taken by the B.C. government.

Our rights as working people to be treated fairly may be slowly and quietly eroding.

The teachers may or may not be deserving of what they are seeking, but we must all take a stand against those who would further diminish our rights.

Even those of us who are comfortable and well compensated without union mandated rules and regulations should be alert, your job may be next.
