Prince George, BC – RCMP have secured a wooded area near Whistler and will stand guard through the night, after the discovery of human remains by a couple out hiking late this afternoon.

Whistler Pemberton Staff-Sergeant Steve LeClair says the young couple was out for a hike in the Alpine Meadows area, east of Highway 99 when they discovered what they believed to be human remains.  They contacted police just before 5pm this evening.

Staff-Sergeant LeClair says officers with the Sea-to-Sky General Investigation Section attended to conduct a preliminary examination of the scene and have confirmed the discovery was, in fact, the remains of a human.

LeClair says, "The area has been secured with police standing by to protect the scene until it can be examined by a forensic team in the daylight."

With the investigation just getting underway, LeClair says more information will follow in the days to come.  He adds there is nothing thus far to indicate foul play.

RCMP are not linking the discovery to the missing persons case of a prominent deejay in that community, 34-year-old Mike Grefner was last seen in mid-January entering a Whistler nightclub.
